There are few things you can do for them since they're children. I've lost several kids and had plenty of destroyed workshops and the like because of that. You also can't punish/jail them, either, because they're kids.
You can put Toys in a small Storage Zone to encourage that - They're attracted to Toys. Whenever I'm making them, they crowd the production floor until all the Toys are distributed.
Now I just send emotionally troubled citizens to live in our other conquered goblin village out of sight and out of mind, sort of like sending them all to an asylum.
DF is the best.
Protip: if a garbage pit zone is adjacent to a channel (AKA, an open drop to a lower Z level), dorfs will throw stuff into the channel.
