Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress

Whats going on with these edge of the map idle dwarfs?
Stumbled for awhile but I have my first stable fort going along nicely now. Even with a few mortality hiccups im almost at 200 population. I have a problem, i think, maybe im
just paranoid.

I get weird visitors, some of them seem to be very resistant or even immune to some normal wear & tear that a dwarf typically faces. They also hang around the edge of the map and remain pretty idle or do one task without stopping.

Sometimes I think its a normal visitor who is scared of the two weremice-dwarfs I have trapped in some walls. Its ok they wont hurt you!

Some are weirder though. I have one right now who swam nonstop for at least 1 entire year and he continued to swim as winter hit and he is now frozen in the water, yet not dead. Just waiting for the thaw and really pissed he got rained on 2 years ago. How is that even possible?

Any ideas on what is going on?? Really loving the game but it feels like a glitch or something I just dont understand.

May your military dwarfs always enter a martial trance before battle, take care

I had something similar, I had a visitor who went to sit in a pond. I thought he was trapped, so I made stairs and ramps for him to exit with, but no, he's happy in his pond. He's getting excited moods over training his swimming skill, due to being in the pond.

On the one hand I want to drain the pond to see if that'll free him, on the other hand, he seems to be happy there.

True at first he was using a water runoff I made as sorta endless pool, just swimming in the same place. I tried to make sure he could get out but he had many ways I am unsure how he remained so tireless and able to withstand the freezing of the water!

On of my dwarves decided to dive into a small lake before remembering he couldn't swim, he died and his corpse was down in the water and no way to get it out...and ofc it was near the entrance of my fort, making all the rest being sad and berserk.

Maybe if he threw himself into a pond of ale instead he might have survived

I've had a frozen ghouls "Administrator" from a Dwarf Necromancer Tower hanging around at the far edge of my map for months, now. His arrival coincided with a plot to steal an artifact by the same civilization. I thwarted the first attempt when the thief dropped the artifact to avoid detection as they attempted to make their escape. I didn't thwart the second attempt, though, and whoever was involved escaped undetected.

I don't know why he's still there. I've read that some Roles/Jobs that they could have had in the past could affect their behavior once they arrive on one's live map, but am unsure how to solve for that or how to troubleshoot for that.

Do you have all the regular "Zones," like Meeting Zones, Guilds, Temples, etc and have all your Nobles that require it at least assigned to Offices?

This sounds somewhat similar to my experience. This seem to have started when there was a plot to steal an artifact while at the same time I was visited by barons and baronesses, 6 of which turned out to be weremonsters. They transformmed as a huge group was in a really popular temple I had made. Since then ive had those weird people hanging around the edge of the map. I think I screwed up by killing some of them (testing what they were made of) because I still have those people coming around but im starting to have huge deadly brawls too.

Yes I try to make sure to implement any details needed for an area. Nobles have offices, dining hall, & furniture requirements.

Something similar happened to me. I accepted too many "become a citizen" requests and decided to exile some of my 170+ dwarves (of which at least 40 were performers, monster fighters, etc.)

I discovered the exiled people had stripped naked and were standing on the edge of the map together. Then, when a cyclops invaded, it attacked the naked crew of 20 or so... and died. It killed only one exiled being. Really weird.

The naked crew is still standing there waiting for the next invasion.

I can't comment on the expelled dwarves hanging out at the border, but I think I know what is going on with the immobile visitors.

Those are agents, specifically of the 'Hang around just at the border of the map and wait for an accomplice to hand off a stolen artifact' variety. Dwarves corrupted by foreign agents will take artifacts they steal and head directly to the edge of the map to hand them off before returning to work.

Normally, the agent they hand off to is always offscreen - you don't normally see them. With how army/foot-traffic on the world map is handled now though, I think what's happen is the agents are arriving one tile off from where they're supposed to be, actually winding up on your map rather than just out of sight offscreen.

I would suggest taking a look at their equipment to see if they are carrying anything interesting, and then perhaps interrogating them with your Captain of the Guard.

Some versions back I had a human Lady master wrestler standing on the edge of the map for years.

It's some sort of a glitch. They want to leave but somehow the game doesn't let them.

I haven't tried, but maybe i's possible to shake them out of it, either by them getting attacked, you could release something aggressive and harmless next to them.

Killing them is also an option - it's probably best for you to get rid of them.

It's super odd the guy survived being in frozen ice. It's usually instantly lethal even for very powerful beings.
