Why do dwarf names flash?
Also, what do the names colors mean?

Flashing mean they are legendary in a skill (highest rank possible).
I think color are tied to their profession ? Kids are red.

I was looking for the same info. I can see a general correlation between colors and professions, but I also have a 142 year old macedwarf with two kids, and his name is in red. One of my flashing dwarves isn't legendary, but did give birth to five kids over two years, so that's pretty notable I guess.

He might be legendary in one of the social skills or obscure skills (e.g., poet or crutch-walking).

Sometimes the military deserves don't color correctly. Does the dwarf have any skills in pump operation, sieges, or mechanics?

The colors line up with the primary job. As you learn the different job groups, you can then just visually see based on colors what job group that Dwarf belongs to. If you want to see those job group colors then open up the custom job in the labor menu and it gives a colored coded list of all the jobs. I'm not sure that the administration and military are in that list, but administration is kind of purple color and military is gray.

Another interesting thing to note is that a Dwarf that creates an artifact happens to instantly become Legendary in the skill associated to the workshop that the artifact was made.

Unless they are "possessed" by a mood, then I don't think they get any skill.

That would make sense, since the one posessing is the one experiencing the moment, not the host.

Disappointed that it took this long, but dwarf names also flash when they are !!ON FIRE!!
In other words, magma is ALWAYS the answer, no matter the question.
