Best stone for statues?
Is there a "best" stone for statues? Should I not bother with stone and just go for solid gold statues everywhere? And if not gold then what? platinum? what should I even use my platinum on anyway? Fancy floors?

On a side note, got a ton of unhappy dorfs.. any tips?
They are swimming in booze and food right now, but not much else.

Check their thoughts and memories tab, and look at their unfilled needs in the overview tab.

That being said, half of the time I can't get them to fill their needs even if I provide everything.

Waterfalls/Mist help with good moods and also help clean off all of the misc blood, ichor, and mud that dwarves collect.

(from the wiki)

https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Item_value#Material_multipliers

The material multiplier for an item is found from the [MATERIAL_VALUE:#] tag in the raws for the material it is made out of, and can be further augmented using [MULTIPLY_VALUE:#]. A wood block uses the same material multiplier as a wood log or a wooden chest - that is the material value for wood, which is 1.

Stones

×2 Cassiterite, Garnierite, Malachite, Native copper, Sphalerite, Calcite, Chalk, Dolomite, Limestone, Marble

Smooth your apartments walls, floors, if possible engrave both of them to raise value and happines it gives to the dwarves around, I think it doesn't cost any material except time and multiplies the value of the sorroundings a lot, try to at least smooth most of your base or where your people use to hang out the most, you can make 2-2 size rooms with a bed, door and chest and their happiness will be much higher, also try to make a temple the earliest possible, and mugs, dwarves hate to drink from barrels

any statue you make from silver/gold etc will be vastly more worth than those made from regular stone, and you can melt down bad metal statues while bad stone ones can only be ditched on a trader for little value.
That said, your marble/limestone etc does make them twice as valuable as regular stone as well, but you need those stones for steel industry as well.

Rather then make statues, what I've been doing recently is turning my fast excess of marble into marble blocks, using those to make floors/walls that have much greater value then your normal floors/walls(ones you simply mined out and smoothed over), then engraving it with the legendary engraver I got on the first migrant wave.
Even better though, if you aquire any native gold/alu/plat Blocks from traders, or smelt bars of such metals, is to use a few select pieces of floor made from those. They are tremendously valuable. I had 4 pieces of Electrum floor, engraved, add around 10k value to one of my guild halls, and its a much simpler process then making many good statues.

Making sure each dwarf(family) has their own, good, bedroom as well as a common dining hall(tavern combo) with legendary value goes a long way to staving off most unhappiness. Add a cook for good meals, a clothing industry to replace worn out cothing, and you should do pretty well already.
