The best you could do is hide away and lock the caverns away until your military is built up OR you have a bunchh of monster slayers living in your fort.
You could always revert to a previous season save. That way you don't lose the whole fort, and then you disable combat alltogether.
If you really play with that mentality, I would suggest you simply go to the settings of your world / fort and you disable what you don't want to show up.
You do that by : Esc > settings > Difficulty > Ennemies OFF
Or in same place you can use custom settings and fiddle with what you want to be aggressive.
By playing around with those, you can always turn back some options so you can learn gradually while building up your fort.
I'm also new, and the "triggers" depending on population number seems very low to me, and very early in fort setup, specially since I can't decide when / if I want migrants,m and as opposed to many comments I see, I seem unable to avoid migrants, no matter what I do to have as less as I can.
Edit : and I trade as minimal as I can, so yeah I did my best to avoid it "naturally"
close off all entrances to that cave with a locked door through a narrow (1 tile) corridor so that is the only access to your base area.
build a second door in that same 1 tile corridor at the side of your base, length between two doors about 8 - 15 tiles
provide a 1x2 area without spears in that corridor close to the door to your base
fill the narrow space between those doors with 'upright spear traps' you'll need a bunch of spears , ideally 10 spears per trap. preferably a metal.
build a lever at the side of your base (outside the corridor) and link all the spear traps to that lever
put a chain in the 1x2 area and tie up a spare animal (f.e. a dog)
now lock the door at the base-side and open the door at the cavern side and watch the forgotten beast. It would get lured to the chained animal, but unable to pass the second door to your base.
once the beast is inside the corridor (step per step using space or ".") lock the door to the cavern so the beast is trapped between two doors.
now put a repeat pull lever command on the lever this will make the traps pull in and out and hopefully kill the beast
Good luck :)
And to OP, by the way if all your animals are already dead outside of fort... you can still apply same tactic and make a small burrow and use a single poor dwarf as a lure.
He will always be remembered as a hero. ( I always have too many childrens anyways, and they can get annoying fast.)
And maybe with the new "frame by frame" while paused, one more door in system and dwarf between door 2-3 (door 3 being locked ofc) while door 1 is open, lure the beast in using the frame by frame command (period is the default key I think) and then once in fort but not to your dwarf, close door 2. Maybe that would work ?
