Dwarf Fortress

Classic mode flashbang
has anyone else who played classic before this update noticed that the graphics are a lot brighter, like to the point of hurting your eyes bright? Don't get me wrong I'm not saying it's unplayable or anything but a brightness slider would be helpful. I always wondered why the graphics in the original were kind of dark and I guess I know now.

Its probably youre not used to the aggressive black on white coloring, maybe just turn your brightness down

it's less of the black on white, and more about how every colour seems far too bright, like there isn't a colour on the screen I would describe as dark, the older versions allowed for some more contrast in the colouring, but now everything tends to blend into each other.

They might have changed the colors.txt? You should be able to tone down the colors in there if so.

Some of the tiles can be quite high-contrast, I agree. Do you mean they're too saturated?

The colour descriptors are in data\vanilla\vanilla_descriptors\objects\descriptor_color_standard.txt if individual items are causing problems (would have to look up their colour, though).

edit: found my old colors.txt from some years back, I think I have desaturated and adjusted these to be a bit darker, in case anyone needs a starting point

comparison of blue, green, cyan, red and yellow respectively (old classic mine on the left, current vanilla Steam on the right)

I would always change the colors to be less aggressive so I'm not totally accustomed to default ASCII colors

It's a lot brighter. For example, the water tiles in the world map used to be Dark Blue, and now it's Cyan ish. It could be nice to change that in options eventually. I don't know how I feel about using the Mouse in classic yet.
