ASCII
Out of curiosity, how many Classic players actually played with ASCII?

On Bay12 forums, there was always a link to latest version with preinstalled tileset and tool to customise it to how you wanted. There were at least 5-6 super popular tilesets, as well as a few others that were abandoned and merged.

I don't know anyone who didn't use one. ASCII was always highlighted to show how insane the game + players were.

I'd done *my* share of ASCII from nethack, omega, moria, angband, adom, etc. and I used the Phoebus tileset from day 1.

So 5% 10% 25%?

This is the first time I've ever done it with graphics

Feel like at this point in time its a fun thing to have but more novelty, I spent most of my playtime with the mephset or dungeonset tileset, but in my earliest playtime i used ascii, though some people definitley still use it including the streamer Joel from VInesauce and yeah its just preference for some, you use it long enough just like the old jank as hell UI you get used to it

I played ASCII last night. Stopped using sprites about 5 years ago. I just like it. Hoping to try this version out tonight and have my fingers crossed I don't need to use the mouse. Otherwise I am right back to 0.47.05.

This does not change the interface, just the graphics.

Just like the .50 version will be on Bay12 whenever it gets released.

I mean, hopefully the team adds in an option for reverting to former controls for people who desire it. I imagine it'll take at least a little bit of work, because it will still need to work with the new interface. So it will probably never go back to 100% the old control scheme.

I didn't want to play DF because ASCII. When I learned we could have tileset I played.

I'm not a "graphics are everything kind of guy", but, I mean, I like to have graphics and not letters on screen :D

Yeah, I played MUDs in the 90's and text adventures... doesn't mean one wants to go back.
I also don't go to work by carriage and enjoy my indoor plumbing alot.

I do. I love the ASCII look. It gave the game a HUGE barrier of entry for me, but once I learned it I was hooked.

It's hard to describe why, but the game is way more relaxing for me in ASCII. It is almost like reading a book. For some reason I pause the game and just take my time to figure things out.

I really cannot wait for them to release the ASCII option for the Steam version.

The only thing I change about ASCII is using square tileset.

I find it's easier to let my imagination take over using ascii, that said. The graphics are beautiful.

I'm gonna be honest. The team they hired to do the graphics for the Steam release did such an insanely good job that it would be hard for me to go back to random letters being animals.

It's in the settings menu btw. You can even change anytime you want even mid-game. Which is great to show people how far the game has gone.
