Do I need dedicated temples?

Will dwarves be more happy praying in temples dedicated to certain gods? I'm still early in the game but only have one general use temple so far.

Yeah they will have "better" happy thoughts after praying in a dedicated temple, but they may as well just pray in the undedicated one (or just not pray at all). Building a temple for one or two of your most common gods may be a good idea at the least.

You can make a generic temple (eg a new embark and you just want to create an initial worship space), but that leaves open the possibility that some of your population will decide to worship a deity related to death - which then leaves open the possibility that a necromancer might develop.

So the question is ... you good with necromancers?

I already had two necromancers move in by themselves so we'll see how that goes.

I was struggling with temples at first. My dwarves were unhappy because they couldn't pray to their gods. After messing around with it more, I found out my dwarves were unhappy because they didn't have any free time to go pray, not that there wasn't a temple to pray at.

You only need to create a dedicated temple when your dwarves ask for one.

I suggest to always have a "no deity" temple, and to be your first. Some deity have like 2 followers in people's fort.
Then I make a few temple for the most popular deity. Right now I have one for 100+worshipper, and then 2 for 70+.


It's better for them to pray in a dedicated temple, but it's not always possible anyway.

A good rule of thumb is have a temple for any god with over 10 worshippers, they dont need to be big so its really not a lot of effort.
