Dwarf Fortress

2 part metal question
sorry for asking a newbie question, but am still taking everything in. For hammers what would be the best type of material to use? ( i wont have it now but knowing will help me plan my route a lot). And what materials would be the best for making furniture and such out of? is it platinum or is there a better one i can possibly get later on by mixing alloys and such

The ideal furniture is platinum as it has the most value.
The best hammer is the metal that weights the most: silver. If you get luck lucky lucky lucky a dwarf may have a strange mood and make a hammer out of the heavier and superior platinum.

Platinum is slightly more than twice the weight of silver. It should be a better choice based on weight alone.

Steel is just the all around best for every weapon, for blunt weapons silver works just as good and has a lower value so its personal preference, for bladed weapons and armor candy is better but is rare and risky to acquire.

Platinum, gold and steel are all great for furniture but you should save steel for military equipment.

Steel for most weapons (cutting and stabbing). Silver for blunt weapons like warhammers, maces, mauls (due to its superior weight). Warhammer squads make effective early game military because silver is much easier to produce than steel and you want the steel for armor sets. Crossbows can be any material, wood is recommended just to make your dwarves move faster. Bolts should be steel if you can afford it but iron or bronze are pretty good, even copper will kill unarmored opponents very easily

Platinum and gold can't be used for weapons normally, they can only be randomly selected by a dwarf during a strange mood, so don't expect to ever have a platinum warhammer unless you are absurdly lucky

For furniture, platinum is best but you can use gold or silver if you have lots laying around, especially if it'll train your dwarves to make better stuff in preparation for platinum furniture crafting

Furniture: high value metals like gold, aluminum, and platinum.
Blunt weapons: silver, steel, platinum if you get lucky with an artifact.
Sharp: steel, adamantine

Silver for crossbows, but I think those have to be purchased and can't be crafted. (Unsure - I changed mine from Steel to Copper because Copper is more dense and my Marksdwarves are more lightly armored below the chest, anyway. I don't plan on them being in melee, but...)

Hammers? Silver. (Lead? Would have to check if it's possible.)

For all edged weapons Steel.

The above discounts rare/special metals.

list of pretty much everything weapon related. Towards the bottom is a simple chart on what metal is best for which application
