Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress

How do you deal with clutter, now that DFhack can't be used?
My current fort has slowed to a crawl, despite my intense endeavor to melt as many unused objects as possible, dumping waste into magma, and selling as much unnecessary crap as possible to the merchants.

How do you handle this?
I can't keep spending 30 minutes designating all the trash for dumping, playing for 10 minutes, then having to do it all over again.

Is there any way to alleviate this issue at all, aside from the aforementioned grueling torture of manually disposing of every single ♥♥♥♥♥♥ item on the map?

In case you haven't found it (since you mention taking 30 minutes to designate) you can still mass-designate items for dumping by pressing... i then p I believe it is. i then P to reclaim. (i f or i F for forbid/claim)

It's an issue...

You can mass click-drag a bunch of stuff to be dumped or hidden, but that's of limited use inside a fortress.

You could try using Quantum Stockpiles to conserve space so you can actually have someplace to put all that stuff, especially stones laying all over the place. But, in my experience trying that out so far, it's a slow process to get a large amount hauled to it.

I'd say Quantum Stockpiles would probably help you out a lot if the issue is all the real inventory you would want to keep for sales.

It's an "exploit." But, since it enables a lot of play opportunity and makes players happy, I don't see it being patched out anytime soon.

I try to run my asperger's simulator fortress pretty tight.

I try not to produce much beyond what I need in the first place via work orders keeping like max 10 of something on hand and available, cept bolts cause bolts, mayor likes em, baron likes em, militia captains like em, bolts bolts bolts.
There is always the nuclear option - Dwarven Atom Smasher. Build a raising bridge, place unwanted anything underneath, lower the bridge. Anything caught underneath is poofed out of existence.

i sorted out anything below 'masterwork quality' and remove the rest once a year via an atom smasher setup, kept me going for 29 ingame years now, i play with 100 population and still get about 100fps, fortress value at 3.2mil. but i come from 200 Fps so it s definitely slower now.

for the atom-setup i use a system of redundant stockpiles, low quality takes from output stocks, then once a year or so i smelt/dump everything which isnt good enough

For me , main drag on fps is animals , i keep a few dogs , yaks , cows , lately some water buffalos, those are grazing outside in confinement + pen.

i caged my pigs and cats for when i need em,
penned dogs are inside locked chamber to keep the pups from running out,
also i noticed closing off caves with wall block helped in mitigating some of the fpsloss, maybe caus they dont look for paths there now; i also dug out flats and put paving outside around the entrance of my fort, so there doesnt grow all kinds of clutter around my base, seemed to have improved a lot.

also did maintenance on muddy tiles , growth cycle on those tiles seems to take a few fps.

ive optimised canal, tried to minimize flowing water path and tilecount for my inner fort waterfall setup (permanent mist in the main hall),

forbade every far lying rock in my stripmining below, i just clear em group by group , which seems to work better for path-to-hauling large quantities.

gl. FPS in DF has always been a struggle :D

I've been telling them to dump the clothing they store in their cabinets every year or 2.
It's super easy, but does take some steps.

Make a 1x1 refuse stockpile nearby the bedrooms. Set it to any single item type that doesn't rot. You just want to prevent the dwarfs from hauling a corpse onto the pile.

Now make a 1x1 dump zone on the refuse stockpile.

If you have other dump zones, pause them now.

Check your standing orders > refuse and dumping > Workers save other objects, is enabled. If it's set to dump, they may haul rotting things into the dump zone.

Now use the dump tool and mass select all the cabinets. The dwarfs won't carry away furniture, just whats stored inside them.

After some time the dwarfs will lose ownership of the items and they can be hauled by others to the dump zone.

The clothing ends up on the refuse pile and rots away quickly. You could also smash it under a bridge.

Once it's setup you just need to enable the dump zone and mass select the cabinets for dumping.

Personally, I think a giant Atom smasher is required for any good fort, clothing is a bugbear though I agree. But if you whittle down the lower quality or unrequired items into the atom smasher stockpile, its only a pull of a lever to remove it. *Lock the doors though, so dwarves don't also get smashed.

Most everything else can be controlled by the menu's, my food stockpiles need my attention quite often to keep them balanced, and I liked the cabinet trick above, I'll be giving that a try.

why does it have to be giant? I just use a 1 cell dumping zone and a 2 cell bridge which works fine , garbage is stacked

X=wall B=bridge(2 tiles covering the garbage tile)
G=garbage designation D=Door L=Lever
Is an atom smasher preferrable to a magma dump..?

I thought I read somewhere that magma deletes objects (or at least, ones that aren't magma-resistant) from the game, but maybe that's inaccurate..?

Either way, the children of my fortress LOVED to play on the bridge portion of my magma dumper, so an atom smasher feels... Like it could cause even more "fun".

not everyone has magma but everyone can build a bridge and the result is the same

Dump from the stock screen and atom smash.

I'm looking into automated junk atom smashing - you need at dump zone next to a chute and at the botton there's a drawbridge connected to a pressure plate somewhere people walk once in a while.

This is the way.

I don't see masterwork only being viable for any non-established long-term fort. How do you expect to get over 100 quality pieces of clothing every year? I suppose maybe you mean everything else. Or do clothing differently

Make the person that drops things off trigger the plate on their way out. I'd also suggest double doors "airlock" setup, as well, unless of course you're looking for a fresh dose of !FUN! from some mother realizing her kid just jumped into the automated garbage disposal system...

I used to limit migrant waves in classic for slower growth just to get some timeflow into the game, heh.

Otherwise every migrant wave was a few days of optimization of tasks and assignments with the time I had to play.

A dedicated tailor very quickly reaches the point where they keep churning out masterpiece items, though.

I like to set a mine cart filled from a "clutter" stockpile to be kicked off when full onto (a floor tile that has since been removed) a stockpile over magma.
