Dwarf Fortress

Draining / Digging into an Ocean
I have big plans to build a fortress that sits upon the ocean and digs a spire downwards into the seabed. After reading the wiki looking at creatures, I noticed the Giant Sperm Whale was the largest creature in the game, so I want to go looking for it.

How are you able to dig downwards and accommodate for a few levels of full liquid? I've not attempted this before, but I'm interested to see how I can spend another 30 hours figuring this out. I don't believe the oceans to be that deep if I'm correct?

Any information or related stories would be awesome, really enjoy hearing from everyone and getting inspired

Nookrium connected continents together with a series of embark/forts so his main fortress would have access to other continents/islands for conquest and trade. In that vod on Twitch, he digs a few tunnels under ocean tiles that he couldn't span with bridges.

Making use of the caverns is possible as well.

You can drain "off map" by cutting Fortifications in border-wall tiles, but I don't know if that actually "poofs" the water or if its conserved and goes somewhere else... I don't think Dorflogic has Laws of Conservation.

Kruggsmash video called Dwarf Fortress Short Fort: A Fort on the Sea could give you some insperation

could you cross the sea with multiple fortresses and get new influx of immigrants?

I don't know if you can build an embark on an ocean tile, unless Kruggsmash showed how, but "yes." As long as everything is in the same timeline and the fortress you construct to build a viable path that crosses that ocean actually do so... you can connect, for instance, with your Civilization if you're isolated and get immigrants from them. (Or should.)

The number of immigrants you can get is relative to your Civilization's world population. If it's very low, expect smaller waves of immigrants.

Yes regarding the influx it was clear to me after the second try that it depends on the already existing entities,

100 year old world, far away from home, got ~5-10 guys and at my 5 year old world near to others only 2 pop

Well, there's always the good ol' fashioned way of increasing your population... Make sure you've got a steady water supply and a hospital for those newborns.

water pressure is a thing, and dwarves can drown. I'm certain it can be done, but it would require some advanced planning and engineering...

The big issue with a shaft into the ocean depths is you can't really build into the water like Minecraft or anything. Your best bet is to build a 5x5 hollow tube that stacks up dozens of levels suspended in the air, then use levers with a support to drop the whole thing. If you're lucky you'll have a hollow pylon rammed into the seabed that you can slowly pump out, at which point you'll have to find ways to lower yourself into said pylon, pump out the lower levels etc. etc. If you're unlucky, you just created a massive pile of crud for no gain. If there's a better way to do this (probably with exploits) you might get lucky crawling through the bay12 forums, good luck!

This is very interesting thinking, I'm picturing almost a large crane holding up a floating segment as if you were building a bridge

I picked up a few graphical mods, I'm thinking it's time to start a new world and see if I can figure this out

o.0

You just told me that I can build cofferdams in Dwarf Fortress...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cofferdam

That's is freaking awesome. I guess since we don't have barges or cranes, we can't just lower the cofferdam down there. Awesome! Thanks! :)

you have a few methods of digging into the ocean, in total there are 3 options:
1) find a cold embark where the ocean freezes in winter
2) dig down until you reach magma and move it to the surface before dumping it unto the sea(Requires steel and time)
3) or you can drain the ocean using minecarts(This will destroy your CPU if your PC is not strong enough, the embark is too big, or you have too many levels of ocean to drain)

Well, if you can channel it down, a few tiles from the edge, then channel to an edge that has a Fortification carved into it, wouldn't that "drain?" At that point, you'd have to figure out how to stop any flowing water, if such was present. (I don't know if ocean edge-tiles are water-source tiles or not.)
