as soon as I was going to make room for a dumping field, the dwarves began to take those seedbags out of the barrel.
I remember clearly that to be a problem in the last fortress, them not recognizing the seed thay had in bags in those barrels.
Did the devs fix something, or could something else cause those stockpile related traffic jams?
But instead there are only sand pear seeds... o.o
I am loosing sanity over here!!
Use only bags in seed stockpiles. And even that will cause some minor issues.
I only use Bins and Barrels for finished goods, ammo and drinks... and for some plant and food materials.
I managed to unstuck some processes recently by unlinking stockpiles. Not sure how much that had contributed to my problem, but now my Dwarves seem not to mind picking stuff from those barrels, that they did not touch before.
Even without those issues, every time a dwarf wants to store a seed in a bag, he will claim the bag, leading to a job cancellation for any dwarf that wants a seed in that bag. It's not terrible, but happens. Put those bags in a barrel, now a dwarf can claim the entire barrel, causing problems for a ton of people...
Put items in a bin, and a dwarf will grab the bin and start hauling it over 200 z-levels gathering said items, and meanwhile nobody else can use them.
I am speechless about that. So you better opt out your fortress for on the fly production with less stockpiles or do you go for big areas of temporary stockpiles for having all those seed laying around?
I can not imagine to completely refrain from the convenience of using bins and barrels in certain areas of my economy.
Most items don't really need barrels, you can just make a really big stockpile. Put cats on food stockpile to catch vermin that will congregate on barelless food.
Some items work ok with bins. Stone blocks, for instance. Crafts, for trading.
