how can I dig up?
Hi !

I wonder how I can dig up?

I tried to make a stairwell or a ramp. For each I see an icon on the top level, but my miners ignore it.

Thanks!

You need to start the bottom in the side of a wall, not in the open. I don't think you can make a ramp and then dig through the ceiling.

Construction -> build stairway.
I had the same problem because I thought "oh yeah Urist is just gonna dig up and magically create stairs because this is a video game" when using the dig stairs menu.
I was wrong.

It's a little bit buggy because the stairs you BUILD on z1 up to z3 won't connect to the stairs you DIG into the ceiling of z3 from z4 to z6. Also, if you start by digging stairs down from z6 to z4, can you build stairs into empty air from z3 to z1? Seems to me like a modder could build a priority hack to make constructions necessary for access into a SUPERpriority, like allow me to build my tower five stories tall if I start with building the stairs from z1 to z6 and then build all the walls from the stairs and all the floors from the walls. Too bad I never learned to code... gonna add that to my to-do list... learn... to... code... THERE!

I have not had issues building ramps up. You set the the ramp at the same level as you can access currently. Once finished you should see it there and in the square above

It's not a bug. You cannot dig into a ceiling. Marking a "dig stairway" order and going up will treat it as if you went from the top -> down but if the level is empty then no one can reach the order.

Once again, you have to BUILD the stairs on the same z-level your dwarf is at to go up.

For me it will not allow placing built stairs if the area above is not already dug out. Which kind of defeats the purpose of digging upwards.

If you designate into un-dug space like this, you can dig up as much as you want.

Yes, this works because your dwarf is turning the block into stairs.

The easiest way is just to toss down a staircase going up to the highest level you want to dig up to. Make sure you start the staircase in an undug square on your level, and drag it to the top level.

In the older DF versions, this was easily done as downstairs / upstairs were able to be designated independently: construct upstairs, dig downstairs on the upper Z-level.

The automatic designation of both in this Steam version is nice, but it can only either construct or dig for all Z-levels, so we still need those separate stairs - perhaps as an advanced option as seen in the advanced digging menu. I hope this is addressed.
