Go into the labor menu and create a new job that deals exclusively with hunting.
Assign him to it.
Make him butcher corpses too and he'll randomly hunt things on his own.

Do you have a butcher's shop? I'm pretty sure they won't hunt if you don't. I'm not sure if there's any hunting bugs in the steam version, though

Welcome to the world of obscure and long standing Dwarf Fortress bugs, many of which have existed for years (some since 2010) before the the steam release, but could not be bothered to be fixed for this cash grab release.

While you can try to figure out which one of the litany of bugs is causing this, so that you can come up with a janky work around, since the game doesn't actually tell you any information about why certain things are, or are not happening, or are or are not working, you really just get to sit there and smash your face on a wall while reading hundreds of wiki pages trying to figure it out.

that's not a very nice thing to say about a game which is still to this day free.

:8bitheart:

The non-Steam version will always be free.
The "drawback" is it has no mouse support and is limited to fanmade tilesets or classic ASCII graphics.

Still very fun if you're on a budget.

The free version does have mouse support though?
