Rimworld vs. Dwarf Fortress As A New Player To The Genre
I'm new to the colony sim genre and was wondering which I should play as a newcomer, given the similarities between the two games.

RImworld - less mechanics, less depth, no Z levels - 90+ bucks for "full game" what doesnt offer even 1/10 what Dwarf Fortress ..will be boring after few games

Dwarf Fortress - living world with history, Z levels, tons of game mechanics, 27 bucks for full game

both are hard or easy as you set them

Dwarf fortress is free (and you can get tile packs with graphics). So you can just go play dwarf fortress for free instead of making a decision

Dwarf fortress has more depth.
Be warned, though, the current version is a little buggy and crash prone (as of now). Should be fixed with a few patches.

you could wait for a while. or you could play the free version (0.47.05)

Rimworld is more about the combat, that was always it's focus. It introduced cover-based tactics and killbox defence strategy game into the genre, but paid for it with simplifications in simulation, building, world and mining.

Play rimworld if you're after combats and gun fights

Play DF if you're after emergent storytelling, multiple story building, vast unpredictable world and a toolbox where you can build anything you can imagine and where most things are simulated to a weirdly deep level.

While RW was based on DF, they're not different versions of the same game they're basically different subgenres entirely and they're doing entirely different stuff and gameplay so they're for different people.

if you're a beginner to colony sims and management games, go for rimworld. dwarf fortress is a difficult enough game to get into as it is, even with all the graphics. bay12 has hosted graphical tilesets for dwarf fortress looooong before the steam release and it didn't make the game any easier to get into; personally, i dont think the UI changes substantiate enough of a bridge to accommodate new players. i strongly feel rimworld is far easier to understand for someone new to the genre and it offers a lot more wiggle room for players when they mess up.

theres no point in trying to butt your head against a wall trying to learn the "game of everything", which people tend to give a little too much credit for because of misunderstandings and raving reviews about the depth of the dwarf fortress. its better to go with something a bit more intuitive and moreover, understand that dwarf fortress and rimworld aren't really comparable beyond very basic observations. if you want just the briefest exposition of what i mean, dwarf fortress is more macromanagement and rimworld is more micromanagement. the two play very differently and offer very different player experiences in this regard.
The free version is not new player friendly. Just get this version. it has its issues, but those will be fixed.
