How do I throw people into pits?
I have a 12 year old fortress with ~150 dwarfs so I'm pretty stable. I'm also bored and want to throw people down a 27z pit. I have a pit but dwarfs and prisoners aren't listed on the pit's 'dump creature' menu. I also don't see any way to toss a cage down it or release somebody from a cage into it.

How do I throw people down pits?

Set it as a burrow and assign dwarves to it, that should work. Otherwise you could try putting them into a squad and stationing them there.

Pits are for hostile creatures. If you want to throw your own people into pits you gotta be a bit creative about it, with retracting bridges and levers for example.

But it was possible to mark caged hostiles for pitting, was that removed from the steam release? (haven't bought it yet)

No clue. I hope not.

Couldn't you do a single tile dungeon with a hatch+lever over said 27z pit? Some loony toons ♥♥♥♥ there.

But won't that throw them off in a random direction?

no it will drop them straight down below the bridge, so designating it as a "pit" at that point doesnt really matter

It will retract into the ground not draw up like a wall. When retracting they fall when being drawn up they are flung.

Just realized this doesn't work. To put somebody in a dungeon you need a chain, but the chain can only be built on solid ground. Prisoners won't stand on hatches or bridges if there's solid ground, so they'll just stand at the chain. Cages can't be used for the same reason. Is there another way?

If you want to dump prisoners you can chain them floating floor held up by a support, use lever to retract support and watch the frames drop as the whole floor goes down along with your now probably well tenderized prisoners.

set a burrow on a bridge, use lever to retract bridge, watch dwarves flap arms as fast as they can on the way down, profit.
