Full Bucket Bug? Entire Fortress Stuck By Well
As in the title, I've a single well on the map, as I spawned next to a river and was using beer to get through the winter. Frustratingly I was just about to finish opening up interior water system, and I noticed the very last switch link wasn't being completed... and there didn't seem to be anyone around. I went over to the well and the entire fortress is there, trying to use it but being unable. And I can't dismantle the well as they're stuck trying to use it.

I did some googling and there's a 9+ year old bug where the bucket gets full, but wont empty and so the dwarves get locked into an endless cycle of trying and failing? And one of the mods fixes it, but I'm new and still playing just the base game so haven't looked into those yet...

How do I get out of this loop and save my game in this version? And should I just leave holes above the water and no wells, if this is going to be a common bug?

I came across this same problem, and the wiki had the solution:
"Furthermore, if the well is built in a layer with a temperature below the freezing point – that is, an ice layer in a glacier – the water will freeze within the well bucket, and the well itself will become unusable, showing a "bucket full" message. To prevent this, build the well and the hospital in the earth layers below the ice. Dump the ice inside the bucket to recover it."

After winter has passed designate a pond where the water can be dumped, then click into the bucket details and mark the water inside it for dumping.

Thank you for the answer; I have long since rolled back and rebuilt underground, but it's good of you to post what you know for others!
