Use Stray Dog Skeleton For Bones?
One of the stray dogs I had bled to death after a fight with a dingo.
I tried to butcher him fresh, but no dice, so I set his corpse in the refuse pile outside and when that degraded into a Skeleton I thought I could use it as a source of bones; but the game also doesn't recognize this as valid. What exactly is a valid corpse for butchery/source for bones?

The wiki is very much no help here. I hope the steam release gets veterans back in to update it, because it is all over the place on whether it's *some* skeletons, *all* skeletons, or *no* skeletons also depending on the type of animal, how it died, and if it's a day that ends in a Y.

The corpse/bones might be set to forbidden so no one will touch it.

No, I unselected "Forbidden" and "Refuse" once I saw that it had turned into a skeleton to try getting bones out of it. I have seen people have that issue quite a bit on the old forums though!

I managed to get bones from troglodyte Elk bird skeletons down in the caverns one time. But generally butchery seems a bit hit and miss. The only way i could get it working was with a custom work order, even then it was intermittent and did not do most animals that took a dirt nap.
Edit: fixed wrong creature from another save.

A dead tame animal that was not slaughtered cannot be butchered.Bug:1180 This includes tame animals killed due to age, starvation, or combat.

Weird, that's not in the known bugs tracker and it hasn't been touched in 4 years even though that specific ticket was confirmed and is still open. This does not bode well for a fix!

I don't know for sure it's still a bug; I'm just going by what the wiki says. Seems to match the issue though.

Please fix.

Also IIRC sometimes severed parts can be used for bones, including sentient bones that dwarves normally spurn as usable for crafting. Serated disc weapon traps are pretty good at this. Pitting a creature off a tall tower and possibly upright spear chambers might work too. That might be out of date though, especially on their usability for crafting; I haven't tried it in a long time. It's possible that was only for artifact bone material demands too and I'm not remembering it correctly.
