i have a general temple, and all it has is thrones and statues in it, and people seem to use it.
Click on your temple-zone, and then on the magnifying glass in the window. This shows you the details of the place, what it lacks and what it has, and it's worth / status.
The good news is that most dwarfs in a stable fortress don't require much effort to keep them happy. It's just there's always that one Urist McZealous who needs to pray to every god imaginable or Urist McLonelypants who needs friends and family, but starts with neither and can't form social bonds. Those are the ones that you'll pull your hair out trying to pamper, especially if they have valuable skills.
