The reason I mention steel helmets is that generally a webbed dwarf is vulnerable to headshots and they are programmed to always go for headshots on vulnerable dwarves in the old versions. This is probably still the case.
But no really, you might want to make a wall and start a military up, make the best weapons and armor you can make and outfit as many military dorfs as you can. then head out and murderfy the spiders.
Be careful of the webs.
That said, if you dont wanna make a wall, try turning off automatic silk collection :P Clothiers will always have silk collection turned on by default. (that might be moved to a different tab/window though. Probably in the labor window somewhere)
Also you will want to remove anything designated - mining, stairwells, harvestables etc
Build doors and bar them (they can be easily unlocked) if the dwarfs keep getting past the walls you are building. After they start to filter back up, then you can wall it off.
Build doors and then lock it (the option is in the menu)
Also this is the way most players fail on their first playthrough... so dont feel bad!
Then jaguars happened. So much blood.
