You build smart, and read the wiki, move at a semi moderate pace, and you got it beat.
To be fair that's why the community coined the term "!FUN!" .
Not dying is easy and boring, doing something entertaining and dangerous get's you killed in amusing ways.
Also most of the difficulty came from the obtuse controls which are not really a problem anymore.
try setting a goal. one the game does 'not' want you to succeed with.
take a look as some youtubers to get some inspiration.
I think I might do a playthrough where I give one dwarf everything,
and another nothing they want...

vulcano is the best place to build a fortress
If the game is too easy then your not really challenging yourself or trying anything new.
I feel that rimworld is considerably more difficult than DF, I have like 2k hours played or more and there are situations that get complicated.
With the dwarfs I haven't even been 100 and I already feel like I'm immortal
