All about stone in DF.
Not sure durability is a concern. Seems to me there are only three concerns: Heat resistance (do you want it to be fire/magma safe?), aesthetics (how do you want it to look, color-wise?) and other uses (is it an economic stone that has other important uses?)
The thing is - all walls are indestructible, whether they are made of wood, stone, metal or snow.
However, there are two things to consider.
First, don't use metal ore stones, gypsum, and other stone that is listed as "economic stone" - they can be used for some specific purposes.
Second, don't use regular stone - make blocks out of it first. The blocks are much lighter (so the dwarfs will haul them much quicker), they are harder to climb (in case attackers will try to climb your walls), and you get 4 blocks out of single stone.
Rock blocks are easier to manage than stones. They are faster to haul, build skill, can be put in bins, and have no structural difference in construction. The only reason to use stone over blocks is that you can't afford the labor/time to make the blocks.
I already read this, it doesnt say anything about wall construction.

or other way around:
1. use 'nearest stone' option so dwarves don't waste time hauling items
2. if you care about aesthetics build walls in one type of stone
3. stone walls > wood walls. Wood depending on your location might not be so common and it might run out, but stones are everywhere.
