Dwarf Fortress

Can I buy this direct so I don't have to give 30% to Steam?
I checked the Bay12 site and didn't seem to see a way, is Steam the only purchase option? (Never paid for DF before, only donations!).

itch.io is selling it, I believe.

What is their cut? I guess this is the distributor / publisher that the Adams are working with for this version eh? Kitfox.

EDIT: Oh, they provide a Steam Key so they're paying Steam 30% as well. - NVMD, Steam Keys have no cost.

What exactly can possibly be the point of selling somewhere else when it's really just a Steam copy?

If they haven't changed it from 2015, it's up to the developer. They set a slider.[itch.io] It can be 0% or 100% depending on what the dev sets.

Default is 10% if they dev doesn't change it.

I'm a bit confused. Is the idea here to give more money to the developer, or not to give any money to Valve specifically? If it's the latter, that's... tricky, because as you say, even itch is giving out Steam codes. (After all, this is called the "Steam version".)

But if it's just about getting more money in the hands of the devs, I think itch would do that...? I'm not sure of the mechanics of it exactly, given that they're selling a Steam code, but I'd think Valve would only take a cut of sales on their platform specifically, since the sales cut is basically a "using our platform" fee.

Steam doesn't charge the title holder to generate keys for sale elsewhere.
In regards to the itch.io Dwarf Fortress purchase, you get the same as the Steam purchase but also a pre-zipped Dwarf Fortress folder that runs independently.

Note that DF on Steam has no DRM so you can just copy the folder and zip the folder and you get the same result.

Thanks yeah, just looked this up. Will buy through itch.io to get more money to the Adams's.

If the concern is about Steam's cut is how much Tarn and Zach are making from the game, you can always donate directly to them through the Bay 12 website.

Truth right there.

Let's try to keep our eye on the prize here. I've been donating to the Adams's for years. I'm going to spend X amount of money on the game. I'd prefer to spend X and have as much of that as possible go to the devs. I'm not looking to spend X + Donation. I'm not made of money after all ;)

From everything you have said so far, Oddible, best bet would be to continue to donate and use the 'classic' version of the game. At some point, there will be an updated tileset for the "classic" version to match and use something like soundsense to add sound and music. Throw in Dwarf Therapist and you have what many consider a superior version of Dwarf Fortress. Both versions will continue to get updates and support. The version sold as "Steam Version" is a highly polished version with a revamped UI to justify the devs actually asking for money. I am sure both of them wouldn't feel any negativity to you for not putting money up to this version. Hell, they will still look kindly on you for just playing their game even without donations. It was like pulling teeth for them to start accepting donations in the first place. Dwarf Fortress was not being made for a source of income.

Completely missed the point. Like 100%. I'm buying this updated version. I just wanted to maximize the amount of money going to the devs without having to pay EXTRA donations to get them the 30% back that Steam takes.

Itch.io seems to be the correct answer here. Problem solved.

buying it through steam will help them overall because it will give them more marketing and sales but you go buddy, give it to the man

Seems backwards. So you're saying that giving more to the actual creators rather than the distributors is "giving it to the man"? Lol as if Toady is the man. Most hilariously ignorant comment.

Yeah, I guess I missed that. Itch.io has the lowest amount the devs pay to the platform. You won't find a single platform that won't take a cut. Stardock experimented with that years ago and that quickly ended. They only release their own software on their own platform now. Direct2Drive went under because they couldn't find a way not to raise their own cut.
As mentioned, getting it on Steam helps the devs get more exposure. In the end, you vote with your wallet, do what you want to do.
