How does butchering work now?
Hi! Returning player here who hasn't played in years, so I'm a bit rusty and need help with a dumb question. I have some problems with dwarves not butchering dead animals, Instead they'll just let them rot.
This happens to animals regardless of them being above or below ground and no matter what size they are.

My hunters have killed yaks, elephants, etc. but never take the corpses back to the butcher. The same goes for Giant Olms and Giant Bats that I encounter in deep caves. When the flesh has rotted away the dwarves seem fine with using the bones for crafts, but they refuse to use the meat for anything. I have only had luck with butchering livestock.

I have a standing order set to allow dwarves to stockpile refuse from above ground in case that was the problem, but with no luck. I have built several butcher workshops, even right next to a dead animal to see if location was a problem. I have also forced one of the butcher workshops to only use materials from any of my corpse and refuse stockpiles with no luck.

I expect the solution to be something that has been hidden in plain sight on the screen this entire time. I just need someone to point it out for me. Thanks in advance my fellow dwarves. :SparrowsonClose:

You've tried several things I would have suggested. One remaining thing to check is whether the corpses are forbidden - there are a number of standing orders dealing with what items get forbidden when a creature dies (including the corpse), and I think the defaults in this version are set to try and keep your dwarves from wandering into dangerous areas.

Good suggestion! I assume forbidden means the lock icon, in which case they should not been forbidden. I'm starting to wonder if it's just bugged. Might try making a new world and fortress to see.

I'm having the same problem, butchers seem to only butcher living animals

It works only if you kill the animal, not on a starved one for example

Was it the case in the free version? I don't think so?

That was the case, yeah. A tame animal can't be butchered if it died from some other cause.

Ah interesting, at least it's not a downgrade then, just a long time bug

Yeah, I don't know if it's intended behavior or not, or why haha. But at least it's consistent? Lol

Interesting. I haven't checked if the hunted animals died from the attacks or from blood loss. I'm guessing blood loss might also make them unable to be butchered just like if they were starved. I'm gonna keep an eye on it at least. Thank you for the answers!
