Dwarf Fortress

dwarves no longer chopping wood
For some reason my dwarves are no longer chopping trees, i've even went to the labor menu and assigned other dwarves with relevant skills to chopping trees and no one is doing the job... is there anything else i can check or screenshots of menus i can provide for assistance?

Do your woodcutters have axes?
Can the dwarves get to the trees? (no burrow enabled, no door locked, no stairs to nowhere, etc.)

go back into the chop tree screen, hit the yellow right arrow, select 1 for highest priority task, and repaint the trees

I found out that my habitual tree chopper is injured in the hospital, and it seems the others i've assigned don't have an axe... how can i force them to take up an axe and start getting to work?

click the carpenter workshop, queue a bunch of training axes. After they're done press y, select "woodcutter" then assign whoever to it so that they pick up an axe; but the equipment was mutually exclusive with pickaxes, militia equipment or crossbows.

unfortunately i have no wood to make any new axes, i have like two copper axes left in storage but the extra dwarves i assigned to wood cutting labor won't go pick them up, i didn't know if there was a way to force them to go get them or to assign them the tool manually.

Is there a way to grow trees?

Are your dwarves in a squad? That can stop them getting the equipment they need. Same for miners and hunters

Make sure that you have them selected at the stump, not in the branches or anything. I had the same problem.

Your dwarves are in a squad. Erase their squad (even if they're not active) and they'll start chopping down trees again. That was my solution.

Not by planting. You can create environments that are conducive to sapling growth for farming, but I don't remember all the rules. You need a couple of z-levels above, the area has to be item free, including boulders. Don't pasture over tree farms, subsurface trees are easier to farm because they have uniform density. Surface trees don't have a uniform density and won't grow if there is a same sapling nearby.
