There are several different eras in the game that your world can be in, depending on how fantastical (or not) it is. I once managed to generate a dead world, where I could adventure for hours and not find anyone, or you can have a world of just humans (because they killed everyone else) and so on.
With no Adventure Mode currently, there's no real way to actively participate in the vast swathes of history as it's occuring.
Furthermore, longer worlds will have fewer megabeasts because they are created at the start of the world and die to various generations of heroes over the centuries. And they're fun to see.
You can if you want. But there's no benefit over 250, except for a richer world you ultimately won't see much of, personally, unless you're the type who gets a lot out of Legends mode.
The thing with the Beasts is interesting. I had intuitively also found 250 years quite good for the start.
Typically, 250 starts at late Myth, or early Age of Legends. I had a 250 go from Myth, to Legends, back to Second Age of Myth again, because the fantasy creatures were winning lol. That's why I like 250.
