Problems with Squad equipping armor
Not sure if this is a bug, or I am missing something here. I create a uniform, in this case, steel material versions of the following:

Helm
Mail Shirt
Breastplate
Greaves
Gauntlets
Low Boots
Shield
Shortsword

My squad is set for "constant training", and Equip/Always. When I apply the uniform, all the icons go red, and then start to turn back to yellow or green, but some of them just stall out, leaving me with a hodgepodge of gear equipped on the dwarves to varying levels of completeness. Pretty sure I have never been able to get them to wear low or high boots (any of them). I have tried this with replace clothing, and wear overtop clothing, same problem.

Any ideas? I have enough of all the steel equipment, I can see it in bins in the stockpile. It's not forbidden or anything.

Thanks.

Maybe it's because of the option to allow partial matches?

Weird, I haven't had this issue, my guys just do as their told {unless its to run inside during an invasion then they just go up and say hello)

Could it be that they have the "partial matches" click instead of "Exact matches" in the uniform section?

edit:

Are any of them miners, carpenters or hunters? Those 3 professions have their own built in "uniform" that they always revert to when not in an active order state or training/station/attack.

Thank you both for your replies! I stepped away from my PC for the evening but I will check both of those things tomorrow. Very much appreciate the help, it's been driving me nuts :)

Alright this was still bugging me so I thought I would give your suggestions a try. No luck =/. Below is an IMGUR link with screenshots of my game if you care to look. Maybe I am missing something in there.

you are missing the steel leggins in the uniform design, also i would use high boots.

Hmm... Everything seems to be right... The only idea I have is to press that Update equipment button, while I have absolutely no idea what it does :D

did you check in squads---> select your squad ------>select all the dwarfs in the squad---->schedule---> edit every order and check if you have the allways wear?

Not a bug but a feature ;)

I just answered a solution to this problem in another thread:

https://steamcommunity.com/app/975370/discussions/0/3716062978744405463/

In short, the problem is that your armor is actually rotting away in your storage because it is stored in a stockpile with set refuse settings.

You can see that in the pic of the equipment in the main stockpile, the helmet as well as the gauntlets are deteriorated to "XXnameXX" already (with the XX indicating advanced wear). The armor deteriorates faster than your dwarfs are able to equip it, just deactivate refuse and/or armor in the main stockpile and use dedicated stockpiles for them.

In addition, as mentioned in the other thread, your squad wont actually equip armor while they are in active training. Just deactivate it for a moment, click on update equipment in the equipment menu and they should equip it.

Sorry for the delayed response, but I wanted to say that @Dejan's advice was indeed the solution for my issue, specifically the Stockpile problem lol. While I am slightly baffled that Steel is dissolving that quickly XD, it does make sense from a gameplay perspective that having a Refuse enabled place would be useful for getting rid of things you don't want.

So for anyone who finds this later, keep the stockpile advice in mind. Also, I have found some success with not only specifying the metal armor to wear but also explicitly putting in "lower layers" like socks, etc into the uniform.

Thanks again for everyone who helped. You guys are the best!

So.. there is another thing. when you make a squad and assign a uniform. If the uniform isn't already made, i/e you manually make a custom one and apply it to the squad, that squad will have problems the entire time with the made custom uniform. So, to avoid that part of it..
1. Make a squad
2. Make and save a custom uniform
3. Disband that squad
4. Make another squad with that custom uniform

Can you wear breastplates over mail shirts? Or does it bug out completely
Chig Bungus Dec 28, 2022 @ 11:22am
Tried all the suggestions here. Yet, this idiot squad end up equipping backpack+waterskin and nothing else. Maybe steel shirts are bugged? ;:(

Made this test squad just to finish and save the uniform. Disbanded it, recreated and this is the result.
Managed to make him equip everything by specifically selecting items, dfoing this for every dwarf in every squad will be a nightmare however.

Are you sure you have armor in wearable condition available? See Dejan's post re allowing refuse in your armor stockpile. Backpacks and flasks are not armor, and don't take accelerated damage from being in a refuse-allowed stockpile, so the fact that they're the only items being equipped suggests you may have borked all your armor by incorrect stockpile settings...
Chig Bungus Dec 28, 2022 @ 11:37am
I have NOT borked my armor. I don't share stockpiles widely, I make them very specific for different items and materials. Like my steel armor stockpile that accepts nothing but exactly that. I didn't start playing yesterday. Just think military is really messed up in steam vers.
