Dwarf Fortress

How to deal with a vampire?
Once upon a time for some not obvious reason one of my dudes became a vampire. And immediately begin to kill everyone around. I wanted to give my military unit a kill command, but I cannot do that. Lol wtf? Okay, I marked him as convicted criminal, sheriff came and put him in prison with bare hands. Lol wtf? Okay, what now? I cannot order to execute this scoundrel, so after a while he got out of prison and turned almost into normal member of society. Though, there are corpses with drained blood begun to appear. Well, who could do that? Sheriff somehow found out that it was our friend. How unexpected. And I have only option to put him in prison again for some time. And if I want to get rid of him forever what should I do? Well, I know that I can drown him in lava or something like that using game mechanics, but why there is no "correct" way to deal with it?

Expel them from your fort

Mine is the mayor and can't be banished

Can't be banished. But can be catapulted from the drawbridge.

Magma is the correct way.
Stake through the heart.

Lock him in his room or better yet, wall him in. Bonus points if you fill his room with magma afterwards

Wall in in a room.... the best accountant ever!!
No food or drink needed.

There's a perfectly correct way to deal with vampires.

Since they're such important people, and their disappearance or expellation from the fortress will upset their friends and family, you should never do that.

What you should do is give them their own room someplace slightly off the beaten path, with a short hallway that leaves 1-2 spaces in front of the door.

Next assign a burrow with them alone to that room, and wait patiently for them to go there.

Once they're there, lock the door or remove it, and wall them in there.

Now you have a little alcove you can put to use. Ask one of your stonemasons to do a nice commemorative statue of your vampire's new "final" home, depicting them doing something fun like cowering in fear, and then install it in that alcove.

It sends a message.
Well I put him in a cage and dropped on the bottom of the river hoping that when winter comes he will freeze to death. Well, he did not, so seems he will live in that cage on river bottom forever, I dunno how to take him out of there anyway.
But I still think that this game must have an official ability to execute such scum.

assign a new hammerdwarf who is strong or a hammerlord, forbid all jail cells, set vampire to criminal, watch as the hammerlord smashes his head into gore. Done this when I had a werewolf outbreak.

My favorite way to deal with vampires are these steps:

1) Get a justice system up and running (if you haven't), to include a cell with a chain that has a 1 wide hallway to get to it.
2) Find the vampire, get him to confess, get his punishment (which should include some jailtime)
3) Once he is in the cell, wall him in
4) There is no 4, you solved it at 3

I guess I should say why I like this option: You might want to make use of a vampire at some point in the future, so now you have one saved for later.

So I appointed mine it's own squad and I sent her away on a raid by herself. Is that something anyone else has done?

assigning dwarfs to a squad of 1 and having them run out to meet the goblin siege is generally my first choice!

in the past i have made a 3x3 raised sacrificial altar on the surface or in the caves, with a chain and designated for justice.

Am I the only one that thinks the best way to deal with vampires is to....

1: make a pool of 3 or so deep water with spike traps in.
2: have the vampire walk back and forth over and over into the trap so the water gets nice and bloody,
3: designate that bloody pool as the fortresses only water supply
4: forbid all other drinks.
5: Segregate the fortress into those that have embraced the dark and those that have yet to embrace the dark.

edit:
I forgot the part about building a really nice tavern so they still drink things that aren't blood, which obviously must only be available in the vampire section of the fortress.

now I know who to blame, when I accuse someone in Adventurer mode of being a vampire, and the whole fortress turns!!
