how to remove live animals from trap?
I have a bunch of vermin and birds just sitting in a trap. Can's kill them or release them.

It depends... If the animals are tame, you can create a pasture and assign them to it, then a dwarf will come and release them from the cage and drag them to the pasture. If they are wild/hostile animals, you need to connect a lever to the cage for releasing (and you should have one or a couple fighters nearby to kill them).

Edit: oh, you wrote trap, and I assumed you have a cage trap, right?

Correct. Cage animal trap. Seems like I tamed some hamsters and lizards but can't seem to get them out of the cage.

give the cage to a merchant and set new ones. They really aren't worth the hassle to process.

Yeah.. hamsters and lizards count as vermin I think, so you probably can't pasture them. You could release them with a lever, but I think Xcorps' suggestion to just sell the cage makes more sense.

Also, some of your dwarves might have favorite animals (every dwarf has a list of things he really likes or really hates in his personality info). So some people build zoos with caged animals in their meeting hall, or put cages into the bedrooms of such dwarves to increase their happiness.

Interesting. How do I move a specific caged animal into a room? Designate a storage for that specific one?

You can place cages (like you place furniture and other structures), and choose "select material after placing", then you should get a list of the available cages on your stockpiles, and pick the one containing the animals you want to have on display.
