Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress

fetid stalkers
so i have just lost 100 dwarfs in 2 seperate fights started by fetid stalkers they have been in my fort for a while before starting the fights and they are both still alive somehow anyone knows how to deal with them? i wasnt able to target them wiht squads while they were killing everyone and im not sure what can i even do about them next fight they start will probably be over for my fort, bcs i probably wont have enough dwarfs left to deal with regular goblin and cave dweler raids

It's a kind of sentient undead, the names are generated (dread hunter, fetid stalker, etc). Did they claim unused but placed coffins somewhere in your fortress? They can blend in with your people if they "own" something. You might be able to interrogate and imprison them but take away their claimed buildings first if you can find them.

Sounds like you should maybe make 2 cage traps next time to flawlessly conquer the 2 fetid stalkers, its something you can make on day 1.

When I first played years ago I tried the Necromancer as valued part of community thing. Now I cage them and drop them into lava.

Could you elaborate more about what they can "own"?

i only found tomb and bedroom also with tomb you will have to either remove any unclaimed ones or asign them to somebody since in my case 1 of them keept claiming any unclaimed tomb

So... not having undassigned bedrooms and avoiding placing tombs before someone is found dead would be enough or does that include such things as unassigned positions (offices)?

... but, if they had already claimed a tomb, while still alive, and knowing that I assigned none to anyone still kicking, would that enable me identifying the suspect or are they doppelgänger imitating someone that was once around?

How you get rid of them? Is it enough to deny them "ownership" of something?

I just keep an eye out for those names, they're always two words after the name AND profession. In vanilla, the announcement scroll for new visitors is a little easier to see, which also helps. As long as you get their buildings unclaimed you should be able to target them normally with squads and interrogate/accuse/imprison them as normal. IIRC, they sometimes just go straight into full on combat when they're finally outed though. And they tend to be very strong.

It can also be really useful to keep two taverns - one outside of your defenses for visitors, and your main one just for long term and citizens. You'll notice people who shouldn't be there much faster, and it keeps other potential non-obvious threats at arms length.
