Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress

How do i bring water to the inside of my base?
I built a well just outside but the game says i have no drinks and i see the water drop icon on my dwarfs. There's plenty of water outside, i have buckets but i can't find any way to tell them to fill the buckets and store them inside.

Also i once did try to make a channel and didn't end well...
Any way to make a sort of pool inside without flooding everything below?

Quick make some barrels, gather plants and brew some alcohol. Dwarfs will work slower and slower if they don't get their alcohol in.

You need to channel one tile and designate it as pond. Dwarf will go grab a bucket and fill it with water so you can build well over it.

So if i make a pond inside my cave i can build a well over it and they'll fill it?

Dwarves need alcohol to drink, they'll go outside and drink from nearby watersource if they have to, but they're complaining about the lack of alcohol.

Might have to fill it before setting up the well. The # will near mini map (?) might show the depth of water. Do you not have a brook or stream on the map? Not sure how it is now, but in old version you had to set up zone near those as source of water and dwarfs would drink it.

Yes i have a natural tiny lake outside the entrance and i built a well on it because i didn't know what to do. I already made a zone for drinking, I'm scared of building anything related to water inside because last time i flooded everything below

Water is only used for healing dwarves in hospitals or prisons. In ALL other cases, dwarves require alchohol instead of water. You'll need to build a still and brew some booze to sate your dwarves.

Might have to build walls and roof over the well and lake so the water wont freeze in winter.

Channel and pond should not cause a lethal fort flooding. It's a single dwarf running with bucket.

Long term you want alcohol for your dwarfs, plant some plump helmets and pigtails if you have the spawns. Set it in the kitchen so none of those are cooked. Make a few barrels. If you have plants above ground, gather those. More alcohol types for your dwarfs. Winter is when your underground crops will keep your dwarfs fed and hydrated.

you could make a channel from the river to a place near inside the base though, if you keep it at the same elevation as the river there should be no risk of flooding, make sure there is 2 tiles of water depth under the well for it to not be muddy water, and use grates to prevent some swimming creatures to come through the well.
Dwarven children may fall in the well, so make sure there is some slope/stairs to climb out.

Also if you make a channel from the river to your base at the same elevation as the river water won't flow very fast, so it also reduces any flood related risks.

I'm not sure if water can get contaminated or something, but just in case I planned a flushing system closed by a floodgate, that can evacuate water to the edge of the map (you need to smooth stone at the edge an build fortifications, so it can go through and exit to the void).

Here is my setup, I also did some kind of anti-overflow evacuation channel at the same level as the river that I'm not using for the moment: https://imgur.com/a/0Z35y3q

If you are worried about flooding your fortess and have yet to embark on an aquifer do check Kruggsmash - Waterkeeper on Youtube. It's classic DF story LP on how to have fun with water ;)

It may contain spoilers of what you'll find in your own game.

Something to consider. Back then, alchohol was preferred over water, not only because of inebriation, but because it was safer to drink.

It is worth saying that when he says "Disproven" he means "People don't do that anymore", this is an historical fact.
