z for zones, pick gather fruit, place it on the ground in the area you want them to gather from. There are three toggles that are all on by default for gather fruit from tree with a stepladder, gather fruit in bushes, and gather fruit that has fallen to the ground. Make sure that you either have dedicated plant gatherers, or the gathering labor is allowed by everyone.

The toggles may be broken, as turning off gather from the tree with a stepladder still results in my dwarves doing it.

I created the area as you said and they cut a pineapple, hurrah.....but do they eat alone or do I have to order them to eat?

They'll eat when they're hungry, or they'll turn the pineapple into a meal or alcohol at your kitchen or still if you have the work bills prepared. Basically you need to tell them what to produce, but all their needs, they take care of themselves with what they have.

I'm not able to get the dwarfs to gather from the ground when the trees drop all there fruit. Not sure how to access those toggles from the steam deck.
Thanks for any help

Just be careful about eating/brewing fruit as it fills your stockpiles with useless seeds

...and remember to check the trees for leftover dwarves. I've started to build stairs to the branches in the gathering zone.

stairs good idea, but so unrealistic

Wood is cheap and I don't care what elves think, so I just make loooots of stepladders. I've literally got a 6x6 stockpile outside of just stepladders so they'll stop stealing them out from under their neighbors.

It's not like their wooden arrows and swords can hurt you anyway

EDIT: Just wanted to add that wooden items are so light they can barely hurt anything, wooden arrows are only good for training and can barely hurt wildlife
