Running fine out of the box with Proton for me. I'm on Linux Mint.

I think you're thinking about this all wrong. As a nearly 50 year old developer, I can see many similarly aged devs, who are male/cantankerous/focused, like Tarn (and indeed many people, Steve Jobs was, and Linus Torivalds is famously difficult to work with), who do their thing because they want to, not because someone is paying them too. Mostly, that's the attitude that formed the Open Source community. The mentality of doing stuff because that's what the client wants, led to Apple and Microsoft. That is simply not the Opensource way. Tarn focuses his roadmap on what he wants to focus on, and produces output, which you can like and sponsor, or not like and walk away from. He's been quite clear, the purpose of going the Steam route, is purely financial, but of course he's going to do exactly what he has been doing for 20 years.
So instead of getting pissy about it, go with the flow. Look at his work, and decide if its worth paying for. Personally, I've had a 100% Linux desktop since Ubuntu 4, and have spent years whining about games not having Linux support, and putting up with slightly flakey options to get my way. Proton is one of those, but the reliability is now more like 99%. DF has crashed maybe 4 times since I bought the steam version. But Tarn will get to it, don't moan, enjoy what's there, make clear your desire for a direction of travel in his roadmap, and keep playing (but do make periodic Manual Saves) or not.
Personally, I spent the 25 quid, and will continue to check in and see how he's progressing.

Dude! :cleanseal: They've already said, that native is coming.

Check out this bit from the Q&A post:

Q: When will there be Mac/ Linux support?

Sometime in 2023! We’ve already contacted a trusted programmer who will be looking into it, while Tarn works towards our other roadmap items. Wish us luck!

Would be good if OP would mark that as answer, so other people wont get confused.

"Native is coming, native is coming" - gullible people

I have seen enough instances where promised native did not come, so my advice is to wait.

That having said, I chose not to wait, and yes it does work via proton good enough.

Proton is a sect. Prove me wrong.
Rainbow Jeremy Dec 25, 2022 @ 12:50pm
Works fine for me on mint.
GG EZ Dec 25, 2022 @ 12:52pm
I Have ran it with proton with no issues.

Doesn't Proton only run with Vulkan GPUs? Or is that something else?

Proton is just a brand name for Valve's build of WINE. So it works for OpenGL as well. Problem is, after Proton has appeared many unwise or dishonest people started promoting it as a replacement for native linux versions.

Basically in every Linux support discussion there is that person telling everyone how they must not ask for native Linux versions because.. Proton exists.

Exactly, you don't even know why.

Native performance, for one. Not everything works well when shoved through a translation layer either. Some games don't work at all through Proton, DRM or not.

Type "does Proton require Vulkan" into search and you'll find how a Vulkan GPU is pretty much a requirement for Proton.
Yeah, it will boot without Vulkan but you're talking like... a 60FPS game might run at 10-15FPS. It's not technically required but it's pretty much required.

This is an important distinction since Linux is often recommended to give older PCs new life.
