The solution for me is to set up a work bill at the carpenter's shop that crafts four barrels daily if the amount of available empty barrels is less than 1. This ensures I always have a cushion of around 4 empty barrels.
They're empty as far as I can tell, they're still sitting in the same workshop they were made in.
Ok, so it's hard to notice at first when you aren't looking for it, but you can tell at a glance if a barrel has something in it or not. If they're empty then the top of the barrel is open and if it isn't then the barrel is sealed shut. Just look for yourself.
Edit: This goes for all containers btw. Bins, armor stands, weapon wracks etc.
No I've got a few that have such a small amount in them they don't look filled. I am well aware you could look at them and tell but even bins I have the same thing happen. If it has say 1 cloth it looks empty...if it has like 4 or more/filled then yes I can tell by just looking right at it.
That's all I can think of from my personal experience. Anyways it is a new feature so maybe a little buggy idk.
I thought it was a lose barrel on top but considering you can tell when that is the case by simply clicking it's not that. and stockpiles prevent that from happening anyways.
I literally had a full gem bin sitting under an empty bin. I thought something was wrong with my mouse at first when I kept clicking on the empty bin to see it was full of gems lol.
Anyway it's 100% accurate in my experience unless they're weirdly stacking on eachother.
Look for a tiny icon that appears in the top right showing that an item has been tagged for another task. It might be that.
