I hired 4 performers, the price of the sanctuary is ~11000* and there is no opportunity to hire a priest, I can only recruit performers.
What could be the problem ?

You also need 10 followers of that temple's religion in your fort, maybe you don't have enough yet? Or it's just a general temple and it's not dedicated to anyone?

He is dedicated and has many followers

The only other thing I know of is, you can't have two priests of the same religion unless the first one gets promoted to High Priest, so if you have another temple dedicated to the same god, that might be stopping you.

This is my only temple.
The city has 195 inhabitants.
It feels like the game wants to say that this is not enough.
Although petitions come to create a temple with a priest

Did you create the temple to the God or to the Religion? A religion worships a specific god, but a single god can have more than one religion, and can also have worshippers who are not part of any formal sect. The game only implements priests for religions, rather than gods.

The other thing I can think of is that it is possible to have no worshippers of a god which are eligible to be priests (adult citizens) - I was confused the first time I got enough visitors of the same religion to ask for a temple, but they were all monster hunters, so none of them could be appointed.

How to distinguish religion from deity?

I only see the difference in color, some white others yellow in the selection box

Gods are in teal, religions are in yellow. A god will also only list a number of worshippers, while a religion will list the god they follow and then the number of worshippers that are part of the religion.

If you have an unmet petition for a temple, the right religion will probably also have a note "agreed to build temple".

I have an 'agreed to build a temple' on my shrine. It's valued at over 2000. I have a performer, I have instruments, I have 14 followers. I have a dance floor of 4x8. It won't let me assign a priest.

I got the option right after i built a "dancefloor" of 5x5 squares. Could the dancefloor both with and height have to exceed 5 squares?

I'm not sure. The option wasn't there, I went and did something else, came back and suddenly the option was there. Unfortunately the petition seems to have expired just before I was able to appoint them.

you get a special popup if you can build a temple for a church the one in yellow letters are important no how many followers a deity has same for guilds.

Latest branch of steam version seems like this is rare case and still happening I have a dedicated Temple 40 plus followers it's solid steel engraved floors it's like 30k value and has a massive dance area, can only hire performers for some reason I've deleted and rebuilt the temple multiple times it will not let me make priests for whatever reason

This is the first time I've ever seen this happening and what subsequently brought me to this this place on the internet

And then a couple minutes later another Temple wanted to get made and I make that one and it allows me to put one person as a priest and that's it, it was only one person in that list.

The game I'm playing on is pretty modded is anyone else's games modded where this is happening or is this vanilla happening too

First things first, this thread is is almost 1 & 1/2 years old, check dates when googling threads, they are rarely recent when searched that way.

That aside, only organized religions, not just worship of a deity, may have a priest. A deity may have 100 followers, but if there is no organized religion they will never be able to make a proper temple with priest / high priest.
