Magma Forge/Smelter Impassable Tiles Removed
It appears that the impassable tiles on the magma forge and smelter have probably been removed, judging by how a magma crab crawled up. If this is true, it's a little concerning since it means that all of my forges will have a permanent risk of magma falls... Anyone have any more information on this? Can the impassable tiles be modded back in?

Good point. As for the upset dwarves, maybe the tantruming guy will be the one who fall ? One can only hope.

So are there any safe tiles to put the magma under?

As of right now: no. Make a reservoir that is disconnected from the lava lake via floodgate (bars/grates are not enough) or just haul magma into your channeled tile of choice using minecarts. Dwarfs may fall into the magma when forced. But you won't have to deal with spawned creatures making it through.

Can fortifications or grates be used to allow magma, but block critters?

Any fortification fully submerged will allow swimming enemies to pass through.

Grates and bars can be destroyed by building destroyers.

The only permanently safe solution I am aware of, is a drawbridge made of magma safe blocks and mechnism.

I tried a grantite block drawbride with an iron mechnism and it melted away as soon as the magma submerged it to flood my pumpstack reservoir.

You could pump directly through a single hole form the magma sea, if you close that hole with a hatch cover. As long as no alternative path to this hatch voers exists, they cannot be destroyed from below. But that condition is hard to check and the safety can be treacherous.

Channel out a small reservoir and fill it using a floodgate+grate. If you want to be really safe make the mouth of the fill duct 1z or more above the reservoir and use a diagonal cut to control flow more easily, then make sure you close the gate so that the channel can drain and block it off with a wall. This completely isolates your reservoir so you don't have to worry about nasties swimming in.

As for dwarves falling in through the passable tile I have never seen it happen without combat being involved and my forges are usually the most secure part of my fortress so it never comes up.

The only hole you should have in the ground is the one necessary for the furnace. There is no point in having more, really.
Making a reservoir underneath was always the safest anyway. That hasn't changed. Since magma doesn't get used, you can fill it and close it with a bridge (need magma safe mechanism and materials), then forget about it.

Yes I was doing this anyway. Left the drawbridge open with only the spot directly under the furnace or the middle right tile of the forge. nothing came through in about 5 game years. Forgotten creatures are persistent it ended up getting in through a crack I left in the first Cavern layer. I didn't realise he would find his way up there. First run at cavern layer 3 pretty fun.

The solution for this is to block off the magma from the magma sea. Dig a channel, fill it with magma. Block the channel. Place your shops. No critters. They will NOT spawn in that channel. I have a magma cistern that's 10x10x3 that I filled from a volcano and then blocked. Nothing has spawned in there in 4 years, even through there's an imp hanging around the top of the volcano.

Same thing in my last fort. 20 years, nothing spawned in the channels.

Fire imps will absolutely yes come through a workshop floor no matter where the empty tile is placed. Tested on a capped off volcano. So will magma crabs.

Prior to the Steam release, you could set up workshops so that nothing can come through. I played using this back in the version before inns and libraries were added.

That is, however, a possibility. They already dump items into magma through the forges if you put a dump zone next to one:

Can confirm that magma smelter now allows magma crabs through top center (previously impassable) tile

May or may not help but I dig an extra level down only in the spot where the smelter/forge needs magma. Also use grates to filter at magma breach. It's an early warning at least.

I always use a bridge to isolate my crafting magma. But I thought maybe you can build a magma forge on top of bars that you place on the floor? That might prevent crabs coming up.
