Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress

Anyone able to tell why my dwarves have stopped mining?
I have plenty of picks made and miners available and the labor settings seem correct. Sorry, I'm brand new to DF so I may be missing something obvious. Screenshots here with some explanations: https://imgur.com/a/ygqop8s

I should clarify that they were mining for a long time and everything was going well. It's been at least an entire season of no mining though now. I'm not sure what's happened. Anything I should look for?

do you have them confined to burrows or something?

I don't think so, I haven't used that feature yet because I don't understand it tbh. They each have their own bedrooms but they don't seem confined anywhere. They still walk everywhere and seemingly do every other job.

Tell me about your dwarves. Are they equipped with pickaxes? If not, can they access them?

Can they access the area where you're trying to mine? For instance, are the doors locked? Are civilian burrows enabled?

Are your dwarves extremely unhappy? For instance, has Urist McMiner become depressed or stricken with melancholy?

Keep in mind my knowledge primarily comes from the ASCII version of the game, and I've noticed that sometimes the Labor Profiles in this new version sometimes doesn't work properly. In my case, it was a dwarf who was assigned to do Wood Burning not building the Wood Furnace I set up, but once it was, he started burning logs as expected, which is not the intended behavior, so it's entirely possible you may be experiencing a bug with this new version.

Thanks for helping look into it. I've noticed they are not equipped with pickaxes. For instance, Zefon Oddomavuz is the lady miner in my first pic but she has only clothing equipped. It says "This creature is pleased right now." Looking at her thoughts, she has 31 positive things and only four slightly bad ones like, "She felt lonely after being away from family for too long." She's doing other work though if I let her. She'll do anything but mine. They have food and beverage and religious areas. No one seems unhappy that I know of.

I have no burrows yet, super new. They are able to access all of the areas where I've designated mining. I'm not picky, just any mining will do but they won't do a single square.

Also to clarify the picks are just sitting in my storage. https://imgur.com/a/NJiQp7D

Maybe set them to ONLY do mining and click the "this dwarf only does specialized tasks* toggle?

EDIT: I have now been informed that mining prioirty is in fact in the game it's just hidden behind a menu. Click the advanced digging menu and try setting the dig site to max priority.

Is there anyone attempting to interact with that bin? For instance, is someone hauling a weapon to store in that bin? Sometimes multiple dwarves will attempt to do a job and one will hog storage containers (this happens frequently with farming, where one dorf will take the whole bag and I get an error message about a lack of seeds, even though we have plenty), so it might be possible that a storage or hauling job may be preventing your miner dorfs from getting their pickaxes.
Did you assign you miners and woodcutters a uniform including a weapon other than a pick or battle axe respectively?

I think I've got them digging again! Thank you guys for the help.

I was looking for the "advanced digging menu" and I noticed I added some custom work detail at some point that must have prevented everyone from doing any mining/digging. I really don't remember what I was even doing with that work detail. Dumb mistake. Thanks for the kind help though!

Mine also are not mining; can't figure out what their deal is.

In your screenshot, you have assigned both mining and woodcutting to the same dwarf. That's your problem.

Mining and woodcutting are mutually exclusive. A dwarf can only be assigned to one of them.

Solved mine by making a custom mine uniform, and telling them to do nothing but mine.

Dwarves don't pick up more then one tool if it still works like classic, this was also a problem in getting military dwarves to pick up a weapon, they just couldn't let go of their beloved tool. Set them to a single tool related labor, or none at all if you don't want them running into battle with a copper pick.

They're busy carrying their axes and can't carry a pick

Related question... Can you get them to wear armour while mining with their picks now or will this still screw up due to the invisible "mining uniform" not including armour?
