How do I protect my artifacts
HELP THEY'RE STEALING EVERYTHING

Apply police (Militia) to stop thieves. Have the militia set up to curtail more thievery.

I'm just gonna put all the artifacts in one room and make a guy live in there permanent to keep an eye on them >:(

Well my approach is to

put my artifacts in display cases and on pedestals in very public meeting areas restricted to residents only. And have a small above ground tavern which is the only unrestricted location in my fort. And bridges on the front gates to SHUT. DOWN. EVERYTHING. And a captain of the guard with an office inside my jail ready to interrogate the thief, and discover their accomplices if any. And a hammerer with a silver warhammer in case I uncover a deeper plot.

build burrows so dwarves cant path to the artifacts. build floor pressure sensors around the artifact that is linked to a bridge that will slam down around the artifact. the problem should be a fine paste now.

It crashed and my artifacts are all back but I'm doing the paranoid permanent guard thing.

I made a room with a display case, and a door that only opens when a lever is pulled. Any time I need to put another artifact in, I station a squad in front of the door to watch while the item is put inside.

you gotta have a motte with monsters in it so that when the wrong lever is pulled the would be thieves fall to their death.

So, development. The guard system works. The man is now caught, artifact protected, and his spine is shattered in a satisfactory number of places.

They're not goblin thieves, they're visitor thieves! They do stealth heists by collaborating with citizens to steal artifacts for them now.

How did you set up your fortress guard to work? Do i need to schedule them as ready?

No, I had them set to training; the artifacts are stored in a barred door behind the barracks training area. Ready seems to make them a bit more aware, though. And I think you're trying to do patrols I saw in another thread, for which yeah, you should set them to ready for that.
