I've watched my dwarves climb over the table in the steam version, so this seems to be the case, yes.
considering there's no gameplay concept of facing for the objects in question, and how it would multiply art needs substantially while there's still a lot of things that don't have adequate art, it seems unlikely.
and a grate would block ability to place workshop last i remember... so no way to defend against the crab x.x
