Stupid question: do I have to play as dwarves? :D

I'm a huge fan of procedural world generation, especially in fantasy 4X and/or RPG settings; but one thing that has always kept me away from Dwarf Fortress is that... I have absolutely no interest in playing as dwarves. I don't hate them or dislike them; I think they are fine complements to any fantasy setting and enjoy them as peripheral factions or recruitable side-characters. I just don't like a game experience centered on a dwarf or group of dwarves.

So, my question is, are there any game modes available that allow you to play as a human faction, a human individual, or human (or mixed) party? (Or mods geared toward this type of experience?) Basically, whether or not I'd purchase the game comes down to this.

For OG dwarf fortress was huge conversion mod which allowed you to play as many races, and its already been proved that porting mods from classic to steam is pretty easy if we don't consider sprites and art... So soon "TM"

You can play as any race in Adventure Mode, be it a Human, Elf or Dwarf.

Adventure mode is only currently available in the free classic Dwarf Fortress sadly, as it is not yet implemented in this premium version yet. For that you'll have to wait. I always end up picking a Human in adventure mode when I tend to play.

There are mods now that unlock the other races. Give it time, I'm sure more are to come. Personally I'm hoping for a mod life Masterwork DF again. I wanna play my succubi.

Look in the workshop. I'm almost positive I saw something last night that lets you play as any race.

Adding to these folks responses, over the years on the legacy/classic version of the game, mods have come out that let you play as all kinds of different races with different playstyles. Masterwork mod for example has 8 fleshed out races. Considering DF has workshop integration, it's only a matter of time.

I had the same doubt before purchasing the game. It's not that I have anything against Dwarves, I just don't feel like playing them. I even have friends who play as Dwarves!
