Getting minecarts to do
So I've got a simple route I want my minecart to take, and I'm having a bit of trouble. just learning the mechanic so I made a simple track from new mining spot to storage on same level. should only need one stop since its mostly a straight line. I set up first stop at the mining area, set it to take items i want, link with another storage area next to it, now the guys will run it up to the big storage with it filled with the items im trying to dump, I have that stop also linked up to a storage and set to empty only. When it arrives they will not dump it and one of my dudes will pick up the full minecart and walk it back to the beginning (poor fella') then rinse and repeat, quite frustrating as one would imagine. any help would be appreciated

The track stop at the destination can be configured to make the cart automatically dump contents?

Im having the same issue. I cannot get the minecarts to actually do what they are supposed to do. I have literally tried every configuration. My dwarves literally will just pick the minecart up and carry it all the way to the end and put it down(they wont even fill it or take anything out). Its like the game does not recognize that there are tracks on the ground or that there is a collection area at the end even though it is linked. And nobody has a tuitorial that explains how to build one properly that you can understand. Most of these guys talk so fast and move their cursors so fast I swear they are snake oil salesman.

It’s because you have the “guide (direction)” set to a direction they can’t go. So the dwarves think it’s stuck and reset it.

the direction is set properly. It is a track thats going to the right. The direction arrow is pointed to the right. doesnt work. The track stop is not set to dump because it doesnt need to be set just like the game states when you put in down. but even if it was that it still didnt work when i set it to dump in the direction that the stockpile was . If this was a mod issue I could understand but i am not running any mods as I have never tried this game with mods yet. They put the cart on the line then they walk away and then they come straight back to it and pick it up and then literally walk it the full length of the track and place it down and never even put anything into it. They pick up a rock or gem and then walk right past it and manually take it to the stock pile wherever they want to drop it.

I'm having the same problem as hydromonger. The track in have the cart on is N/S and I have them initiated to push N/S. When they kick, it works just fine. When I ask them to go with it, they just pick the damn thing up and haul it. I'm seeing on the wiki they can detect if part of the track is "closed" and that can cause this issue, but I'm not able to figure out why they are doing it in my case.

If i understand what you did right, here's your problems:
First, route logic. Press a "<" icon next to the route condition for your main stockpile stop. That will change the condition from "move when at least 0%" to "move when empty". The difference, is that at least 0% means ANY %. So that will stop your dwarfs from running a full minecart back.

Second, you really want to add a direction to your second stop, that will make the minecrart dump all of it contents in the set direction without dwarf having to do anything. To do that, you need to build a "rail stop" on that spot.

so i figured it out ... it has nothing to do with stops and directions cause im pretty sure we are not that shortsighted to see which way we want our tracks to go. It all has to do with the track itself. there are 2 tracks. one that you can lay that is selected next to the track stop itself which i have been useing and the other is under engrave. I switched over to the engrave track and wallah worked like a charm with all the same settings that i have been using cause they are obvious. I have no idea why there are two sets ... maybe one is for above ground or only for going down ramps or whatnot but the engrave track is the one that works for my situation.g

The second set is to a construction you can build on top of anything that is not a solid rock, including made floors. Both tracks work fine, you can even connect engraved track to constructed track. As i was writing my response to the OP, i had a perfectly fine track that was half engraved, half constructed, so that is not an issue. Whatever was your issue, it had nothing to do with the track.
