Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress

Mountainhome
Hi,

I’ve read Toady saying that they added the goal of being a Mountainhome. Can someone tell me what it is and how I can verify my progress regarding it?

Becoming 'the Mountainhome' basically means becoming the capital city of your civilization, which means the King moves to your fortress. It's really just about becoming large and successful enough of a fortress in general. Or... digging deep enough and getting lucky ;-)
I believe it's the rank of your fortress when the king arrives (making it basically the capital of your civ).

here are the details for 47.05 version: https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Fortress

To illuminate on this for anyone who stumbles onto this, becoming the true Mountainhome is no longer just about obtaining wealth but has a rather cryptic requirement which is revealed to you when the king moves to your city and deems it worthy. This is new as of the steam release and the articles from 47.05 only describe what it is and not the goal I think that Toady was likely referring to.

I've got a Mountainhome in my first, real, playthrough. I don't remember anything really significant about getting it. As far as I was concerned, normal growth in population, wealth, not dying, basic things like Steel was all I needed to eventually just fall into becoming a Mountainhome.

If there was anything special in achieving it, I've forgotten what it was.

When was this? There are new requirements with the steam version that definitely require some specific actions.

When? Like... last week? Not long after i started playing Dwarf Fortress. I purchased on Day 1 of release, played a couple of days after that, played a bit each day, got the first patch, then mountainhomed not long ago.

Why so cryptic? What are the requirements? I've evidently met them, so... ?

There are new steps after acquiring the king.
TBH I did those steps and nothing happened so, I think they need more testing.

But getting the king makes you the mountainhome, don't it? The steps to getting the king are the same as always.

I checked the wiki and am not further illuminated by knowledge of what's required, which seems pretty consistent with DF's sometimes cryptic wiki... :)

My King showed up and there may have been some requirement, but I honestly don't remember it. I was pop-capped, so it was just him, a general, a liaison and that was it IIRC. I didn't know what was going on, so didn't expect anything. If there was some Big Thing I had to do, I accomplished it easily and forgot about it. :)

Some people would consider the answers spoilers. But I'm gonna go ahead and say you didn't fulfill all of the requirements accidentally, since part of what's required is digging up a bunch of buried artifacts and making an adamant one throne. And none of those are "whoopsies".

This is not true (entirely).
What you say is A method. But the "whoopsie" also exists as I have a king right now and haven't seen the first cavern yet (Vulcano embark).

I think there's a bit of miscommunication here. Is your fortress specifically a "Mountainhome" or just the "Capital"? Because the "quest" to become a Mountainhome begins with the Monarch making demands for Divine Artifacts and an Adamantine Throne.

The community is still trying to figure out the specifics, along with most of the other new content in v50

I do now remember that when the King showed up, I received a message that I had to build a "throne," which I though was sort of silly, since all stone chairs are called that. So, I built a Throne and whatever other conditions went with that message(s). I built it out of gold/silver/platinum or something like that. NOT adamantium - I have refrained from uncapping the Caverns, surprisingly enough.

Then, there was a congratulatory message that I was now a Mountainhome when it was complete. There was no unusual requirements in those messages, else I'm sure I would have been better able to remember them.

(As far as spoilers, I get it, but... this is a bit outside of the FUN part. It's progression related and some practices in the past that may have evolved in a tight-knit community probably need to be altered a bit.)
