Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress

Seem to always run out of seeds
New to the game, really struggling with farming, my dwarves never seem to get more seeds from farming than they use, just wondering if there's something i'm missing

You don't get seeds from farming. You get seeds from either brewing the plants or your dwarves eating them raw (be careful if using the kitchen to cook meals, you want to disable cooking those plants, as the seeds will be lost if cooked).
So if you run out of plump helmet seeds, you just have to get your dwarves to actually do something with all those plump helmets in your storage.

I haven’t played In a long time and had the same issue. It’s because the starter seed plants are allowed to be used in cooking by default (god knows why it is not off by default - almost seems like some unintentional built-in failstate). So every new embark you should disable it in the kitchen menu.

Same problem here. Where do I find the Kitchen menu to disable the use of seeds for cooking???

the seeds will likely be disabled by default, the problem is that the plump helmets themselves won't drop seeds if you cook them so be sure to disable that too.

Not that it helps you right now, but bring a bunch next embark. Or ask the liason to bring some.

yes, make sure your seeds are set to disable in brewing and cooking from the kitchen tab. At least in OG some results would vary. You would get seeds from brewing. You would get seeds from certain processing tasks.

If i am not mistaken, in OG if you cooked/ate a Plump Helmet no seed. If you processed the <insert Plump Helmet here> at certain workshops like a farmers/brewers workshop you would get seeds.

If you are operating mechanics like a screw press, quern, etc the tasks could remove the seeds.
