Can't dig "upwards" => Stairway up not build
Hello,

I currently try to dig "upwards", but I'm, really close to get crazy. I've read many tutorials and discussions for the ascii dwarf fortress version, but all what is mentioned doesn't work. My currently setting is a 3x3 room digged out. What I wan't to archive is going one level up. So I tried to build a channel from the upper to the downer level to remove the floor. What happend is, that I had now one tile of open space in my lower level, which I fixed with a floor and a construction of a ramp. The ramp was build, but the dwarves don't mine the upper level, so I replaced the channel tile with a mining tile and still nothing. Even if I dig a stairway from up to down it doesn't seem to work.

I know, that I can't use the "mine stairway" for the lower level, since the space is already mined out.

So what do I miss here?

If it is already mined out, you have to build the stairs. Build Menu->Constructions->Stairs

Try to construct a stairs out of wood or stone instead of mining one out. See build constructs menu.

i think there was the option to construct a stairway in the old df. construct like a door or smth. Correct me if im wrong

Yeah, I remember, that I could say, which kind of stairway I wanna build in the ascii DF, but here I can only select the area (downer level), scroll up to the upper level (where the stairway should end) and klick again for constructing the stairway. The problem is, it doesn't work since the upper area isn't digged out. I can only build the stairway up, when there is a free space AND I have to scroll up at least one level. I can build a ramp (which should make it possible for the dwarves to go up, remove the floor and dig out the stairway, but even that doesn't seem to work. Super confusing and frustrating ...

Confirmed I could not find a way to dig upward into solid rock from an open room which didn't already have stairs. Curiously, building a ramp against the wall is allowed even if the space above is not open. Though that still doesn't allow miners to dig up.

start a staircase (press M then T) and place the first point on an unmined wall (a raw resource, not an open space or constructed wall) then go up a level and place the second endpoint. ;)
