For mining they do, but there's more you can do with a pick than just mine ;)
Mining counts as a combat skill, and since miners tend to level up quite quick they can be formidable in combat. A masterwork steel pickaxe makes a big difference over a basic copper one when things pop out of somewhere and attack your miners.
Dwarves can get attached to items they use often, and even give them little names.
Calm down, the guy didn't even criticize the game, they asked a question. Which has been answered, and they thanked the person that answered them.
And even if they did criticize the game, it's their right to do so (just like it's other people's right to explain why they'd think that person is right/wrong). You're acting like an ass right now.
but yeah rain is kind of bugged right now needs fixing bad complaint there ... and workshop bugs really hope butchery is fixed
