powering machines through Z levels
I used to do it in old DF and I cant figure out how it works.

How do I get the vertical logs to work?

Just use vertical axles stacked on top of each other, down to a gear.

The problem is I cant get the power into the vertical gear to begin with. I have a windmill on the roof, and a millstone in floor below that.

I have only experimented with transferring power between pumps on different Z levels, and the stacks are a bit different now. I had to attach a gear to each pump, then transfer power through floors with other gears, not directly between the pumps themselves.

Maybe try placing a gear next to the windmill and see if it rotates, if it does remove the gear, channel a whole underneath where you're going to place it, place it back and put one directly beneath that one. Should work, hopefully.

I found the answer, the gearbox must not have a floor under it to send power down. You do not need a vertical log as placing the machine under the open gearbox still sends power. Logs are only needed if the machine is more than 1 Z level away.

Can we get screenshots how you did it, i tried everything. At this point how to remove floor? if that is the issue.
Edit: Issue is i cannot send power down a level, no matter what i do. mechanism ontop of mechanism, from mechanism into axis, or from mechanism into machine nothing works, how to send it down a level?

Under the mine menu, channel. That removes a floor.

sandy loam cavern floor, when i hover over tile i guess that's the problem, but i cant put stairs to make a hole, and to remove floor i can't find a option for that.
Where is mining menu? In digging order?

I can do it this way with a rough schematic

[Gearbox] [Machine on a floor] = Hanging gearbox connected to machine

[Gearbox directly under hanging gearbox] [Machine/Axle]

So to send power between levels you need a gearbox and either a missing floor or roof.

For anyone wondering in "Digging order" you need to dig channel the 4th order to remove floor. That's the magic to allow power to move between levels
