dwarfs wont dig
I've got 6 pick and a designated stairway going down 5 levels from the starting level but the picks remain in the stockpile. Mining is checked for everyone. What going on ?

Make sure you are digging the correct level, it happened to me when I was making stairway downwards I was actually building it upwards

In the labor menu, Mining is set to "Only selected do this"?
Your wagon is not blocking to top most access and the designated "down stair" to be dug on the top floot is visible?

Is the start of the stairway accessible to the dwarfs?

Nothing is blocking..the stairs are in the woods the mining designations appear to be set up correctly as they are showing a down stair. I tried to set them to only do this and it didnt help. The picks are in a weapon bin..is there are a way I can get them out incase this is like the seed container bug? Also the "everyone can do this" button is greyed out only for mining. is that weird?

Same here. I have 1 dwarf who is digging but like 3 pickaxe in storeage. I Set 4 dwarf on mining in Labor menu but they don't Equip the pickaxe. Also I don't know how to say them Equip other stuff like armor/cloth. .

its possible that your dwarfs prioritize hauling over what you want them to do. You can use the jobs menu to make sure they exclude that from their duties and focus on mining or whatever it is you want them to do.

My dwarves are standing next to the former cart with "no job". I feel certain they are not seeing or not equipping the copper pickaxes for some reason. The copper battle axes used to fell trees had no issue and are still held by lumberers even though they have no chop orders.

Same, i have tried 3 different embarks now, and i only get one dwarf digging, and he gives up after a few moments, lots of tiles assigned to mine, labor set to any job, picks available, but nothing :(

OK, i'm thinking this would of happened on old DF with suspended jobs? but i cant find suspended jobs?

You are trying to build stairs not dig them?

I tried to dig stairs, channels, ramps in various forms under the pick button. none of the orders would order up a task/job. If It was construction I would have been prompted to choose a material.

Happening to me as well, first embark went fine, but wanted to try a new location. Dwarves will chop stuff down fine, but refuse to mine anything. I've enabled mining on all the dwarves, and there's two copper pickaxes on the ground, but the task doesn't get created

Does mining stairs down even work in soil?

That fixed..turned them off woodcutting as well and they went to work. I recall Dwarf Therapist made you choose between mining and woodcutting as well..what a weird distinction..thanks! You might have saved the game for me!@
