Font hard to read.
I made a mod that increases font and UI resolution to fix my complaints.
https://www.nexusmods.com/mods/2?game_id=4756

seems nexus doesnt have the game added yet for submitting mods...will be available after DF gets approved.
ive added my mod in the DF discord modding chat as well.

---------------original post--------------------
Ive tried adjusting the scaling grid size and this helped me a ton in reading the font, but I have two big problems.

1. I dont actually understand the UI grid scaling options. I made the size of vertical as small as allowed and scaling got bigger but it might not be ideal. No Idea. Some UI especially tutorial prompt covers things.

2. This is the big one. The font is not a solid color. it has speckles. The speckles are hard on my eyes to read the font. A mod for solid color font would be wonderful.

Any mod available to address point 2 in particular?

Thanks for any thoughts or feedback. If you have similar issues I guess just keep posting to bump the thread and maybe it gets looked into by the wonderful bay12 team or community.

Totally agree on both counts.

Yeah my first impression was the font is not very legible, surprised more people aren't mentioning it.

When I thought I was going to wait for the graphical version of DF to come out, I didn't realize I would have to state that I also imagined it would come with a readable font.

most people play on 1080p the game was clearly not tested on anything else, even the title screen looks so unprofessional at higher resolutions.

Looks fine on 1440p, but I also have the Windows scaling set to 225%(app scaling not text scaling).

I know the OP mentioned the grid size, but it's not very intuitive, so here are instructions on increasing the font size:

In the video options, make sure "scale interface to fit grid width" is set to Yes, and change the "Desired Grid Width for Scaling" to a low value, the lowest you can, for both width and height.

I'm running at 1280x1024 with those settings and it's working out well. I may try a higher resolution now that I know what to do actually.

I don't have a black border, but I did have one at 1280x1024, because it's a square-resolution. Are you sure you're on a 16:9 resolution?

The game doesn't tell you this, but to see the UI scale changes and graphics changes you have to relaunch the game.

I can happily report that I now have the game looking great with a readable font and at 16:9 fullscreen resolution (1920x1080)

I hope so, DF gives off big bedroom coder vibes so I'm praying the real mods start coming out ASAP.

As soon as i'm able, I'm installing the Expressway font.

It works, I assure you. Make sure you follow the instructions (set the scaling to yes, and the grid size to the lowest possible values) and also restart the game. It's important that you pick the right resolution as well, so you may want to try some different resolutions. I recommend 1920x1080 (i.e. 1080p).

Edit - btw I also have aging eyesight and it worked well enough for me to consider the game fully playable, on par with other games with readaable fonts.

Another possibility is UI scaling in windows, but I don't know how much I would recommed that. That's more of a last resort for me.

mods CAN save the text.

So ive been hard at work, and ive gotten the 16x16 font working the default is 8x12

Simply using the 16x16 font will really screw the game up...so I had to go through and redo all the interface graphics and change all the related files to recognize the new grid size of 16x16 and new file dimensions all increased resolution for interface elements.

I still have a few glitches with how some of it fits together but font is much cleaner.

I think I did that right.

squashed the bugs. Hope you guys all enjoy.

-----edit-----
nexus does have DF in their game list yet so it says waiting to get approved.
you can join the DF discord https://discord.gg/8xVVGfS5 and I posted font mod in the modding chat.

1. go to dwarf fortress install folder.
