Dwarf Fortress

Stuck on Initial Tutorial
In the initial tutorial, Mining (Step 2), it has you build stairs. I'm unable to progress past this point because it doesn't seem to be registering in the tutorial for the end stairway.

What I'm doing:

1) Click the "Stair Mining" button from the "Mining" menu.
2) Left-Click a tile on the map on the ground floor elevation. (This seems to be registering as it's highlighting the tile with the gold square)
3) Scroll-Down to go to the next level of elevation below the ground floor.
4) Left-Click a tile on the map on the next level of elevation below.

Step 4 isn't doing anything. It doesn't complete the tutorial "End Stairway" and nothing else happens, the gold square just disappears.

For reference, this is what the tutorial states to do:

"There are several ways to mine. Stairwells (selected) start at one elevation and are completed at the next. Click the surface, move the camera down one level, and click the underground. Reversing the order also works."

Based on the tutorial description, this is exactly what I'm doing. What am I missing here?

EDIT: Nevermind, I figured it out. The scroll wheel is inverse for the elevation.

It's a little weird, I had to try it a few times to figure it out. You click and then that starts a selection, then the second click ends the selection. Almost like click and drag, but you don't hold the mouse button down.

Perhaps you are double clicking without realizing it. Are they digging the stairs?

you have to click on the same square, but on a different elevation to make the stair, and not on the square next to it on a different elevation.

Stair can also be made to go down multiple elevation, thus you could start the stair at elevation 50 and end it at elevation 40, and then start mining around the end of the stair to make a tiny room there
click on the ground > press c > click again > unpause (spacebar)

So, this is exactly what I'm doing. Single clicking the square, going down an elevation, and then single clicking the same square at the lower elevation....and nothing happens.

To note, in the tutorial - you cannot unpause the game. Selections of the Pause/Play buttons are disabled it seems, since it requires you to stick within the boundaries of the tutorial itself.

This happened to me because I was going up in elevation and not down.. The scroll wheel is kinda reversed..

Thats strange. It wasn't blocked for me when I did it. Try hitting space bar, that's the pause button.

Also you can change that in the key bindings..

Yeah, I would have expected that when I scroll-down that the elevation spans up much like a camera would, while scrolling up would span down into the earth.

Either way, I've resolved it now :) Thanks everyone!

Oddly enough, the mouse wheel for me didn't feel reversed for changing elevations, but the ] hotkey as well as the [ hotkey felt reversed when it came to zooming in/out of the play area, to where I had to swap them in the settings.
