Does this game go on sale?

I know it just came out on Steam and I'm just wondering if it ever goes on sale on its original website or is it like a permanent thirty dollars like Factorio

it's free on the original website but without the UI overhaul, new soundtrack, and new texture pack as of now. who knows if it will go on sale on steam.

the original was always free, you can use tiles with mods, this release is an official bringing the game into a more modern age with a better UI and Tutorial, where as the original was always hard to learn. If money is an issue for you Im sure there are tutorials out there to help newbies learn how to play the original version

Fyi, the original is all ASCII graphics, but there are ways to use custom tiles, the nice thing about this new official release is the tile displays are scalable supporting zooming in and out

We don't know yet, but this release is basically meant as a fundraiser for the two brothers for healthcare and future retirement funds. They always believed in having their games accessible to everybody. that's why they had the game for free for decades, and will continue to make the classic version of the game freely available just without the specific tileset and music that the steam version has.

Based on that I wouldn't be surprised if they would have sales once their future and health is secured. But since there will be an updated is a free version that will have free tileset mods as well sales might not even be necessary to have an almost identical experience. So there is no telling if it'll happen and if it will, when precisely.

But they will always have the biggest discount on their game on their own bay12 site. There will always be a completely free dwarf fortress to enjoy. The classic update will arrive with all the improvements to the base game. And the gameplay is in the end that's what makes DF so special, not the tilesets.

Serious answer: look at the publisher's (Kitfox) other games. They go on sale regularly. So it's relatively likely that DF will go on sale too, eventually.
